Donating Breastmilk to SCBU *blinkies added 1st post*

Wow thats really weird how they all have different rules!

I found this on the ukamb website so it might be worth asking again, incase they were wrong, i dont understand why some would have different rules though as it uses the word 'most', i really want to donate for as long as i can, you would think they would want as much milk as they could get!

Donor health and lifestyle

If you are interested in becoming a donor, please contact your local milk bank. Staff there will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
The milk bank will need to know that you are in generally good health and most will ask that your baby is under 6 months of age when you start donating (See FAQ section). You may continue to donate when your baby is older than this.
Some of the questions that you may be asked are:

Do you have any medical condition?
Do you routinely take any medicines including herbal remedies?
Answering yes to these questions does not mean that you cannot be a donor, but the milk bank staff may want to talk further to you.

Do you smoke or use illegal drugs?*
Do you routinely drink more than 2 units of alcohol per day or 3 cups of caffeinated coffee or other caffeine-containing drinks per day (cola drinks, sports drinks, Red Bull etc)?*
Have you tested positive for HIV 1 or 2, Hepatitis B or C, HTLV l or ll or syphilis?*
The milk bank will arrange for a sample of blood to be taken and tested for infections, which might be passed on through your milk.

*If you answer yes to any of these questions the milk bank will not be able to accept your milk.

Yeah i thought the same, but the women i spoke to was talking about the blood tests and said that they usually test a few times during the six month donating period. She said that i would probably only have one or two tests as i am already nearly three months and that they will only take my milk up until Calleigh is six months.
Well i shall just have to donate as much as i can in that time period :)

The letter i received from Cambridge said 7 cups of Coffee!!!

Grrr They still haven't got back to me about my hayfever tablets!
All I got was one message telling me she still hadn't sorted it, I've been away for a week but I would have like to be sorted by now.
I said I can either change the tablets or just stop taking them if they like, but no reply about it.
It's making me feel like they don't need my milk :(

Mind you, will all you lot doing it now maybe they don't!

Just spoke to them, they are sending my bottles etc out so I can get started and they will find out about the tablets asap. I just won't take any for now.

I need ways to get my supply up a bit, just drank a pint of water LOL.
I have a very fast flow but don't often feel "full"

I'm concerned coz i don't feel full anymore. I've delayed before starting to express coz i have vehicle issues and can't get bloods done for another week. I've had my bottles 2 weeks already. With me delivering i don't want to leave them in the freezer too long.

Where are you delivering to again?

The lady I spoke to didn't seem at all concerned to get milk back quickly, even after they have it they pasturise it and mix it etc.

Maybe I willl buy some fenugreek but first I'm going to drink loads of extra water as all I ever seem to drink is tea and coffee.

They are sending me 14 bottles

I'll be delivering to Cambridge. It's something like 50 miles away from me.
I wouldn't even know how to get it there without it defrosting.

I'm sure if you ask they will tell you the best way to transport it, maybe in a cool bag with some ice packs :)

I've made this a sticky so maybe more people will see it in future and donate with us :)

I have some fenugreek, half a bottle if anyone wants them to help them with there flow!
Pm me, I dont want anything for them.. They are still in date x Will gladly send them to you..

Wow good idea making this a sticky, its such a good cause.

I have been expressing for longer and longer each morning (always after feeding morgan so he has enough to eat) and the amount is going up each day, which just prooves the old supply and demand rule is true. Once your milk stops flowing keep pumping for another 2-3 mins as this is what tells your body its not making enough. yesterday morning i pumped 10 and a half ounces in one go, just over 5 ounces from each boob!! OMG !!! Think i had better be happy with that otherwise my bazookas are gonna be huuuuugggggeeee!!

Ive always found that once it stops coming, if you're patient it comes back after few minutes and you get more too :D

I need to check with the its ok to take fenugreek, unless anyone here knows for sure?

Mr bottles have arrived, I have borrowed a pump from a friend and bought a steriliser today.
Just had a go and only managed to get about 1.5 ox off, I need more practice as I haven't done it for ages... any tips anyone?
p.s. I pumped at the same time as feeding.

I pump first thing of a morning after Calleigh has had her feed. That is usually when i am at my fullest.

Massage before you pump anda hot bath first is always a really good start, though not always possible when you are a mum. I just want to add that I think this is a fantastic idea and thread. Austin was in SCUBU for 6 weeks and although I was lucky enough to be able to give him my colostrum and breast milk straight away there were other mothers whos milk had dried up with the shock of early labour and not being able to put their baby to the breast. It was so sad to see such tiny babies on formula and suffering with distended tummies and general discomfort. At that tiny age breast milk is definetly by far the best gift you can give. Also in hospital it is even more important to get those anti bodies.

I'm quite moved by this whole thread x x

Right, after a VERY busy few weeks I am determined to start expressing regularly starting tomorrow. I do feel like my boobs are never full though so I think it may take a while to get a decent amount.

In the meantime, Miss Larue has very kindly made some blinkies for donors if you would like one :)

Here they are, I will also put them in the first post

They are on my photobucket and I will leave them there so you can just link right to them :) I won't be using one just yet until I know I can definitely do it

Thanks loads Misslarue I think they are fab,

Well as Cally turned 6 months on thursday I have had to stop donating. I did 21 bottles altogether, not bad considering I started just over 2 months ago, and Cally has gone through a number of growth spurts and teething (and the last thing I wanted to do on those bad days was to express too).My milk was also going st the end as she dropped the late feed and I was expressing at that time only (at the start I was getting 100mls in 10mins, at the end I was having to use both boobs). They are coming on weds to pick up the milk (I get my freezer back yay) and to do the blood test (the day I go on holiday typical).

So thats me done.

Well done beanie, you've done an amazing thing - just think of all those tiny sick babies benefiting from your boobie juice!

I'm really proud of you
