I think I may want to do this, has anyone ever done it?
I've been reading up

http://www.ukamb.org/donor.htm

And will give Birmingham women's hospital a ring later.
I will need to buy a steriliser etc, but I'd love to do it.

Anyone else fancy starting up? we could all do it LOL

Misslarue has very kindly made some blinkies for us!

Thank you I love them!

awww ive read a bit about this before  what a really lovely thing to do well done hun  xxxxxxxx

Yeah i looked into this the other day because there was an article about a woman who sold her breast milk on ebay to men!!!

I thought it would be so much nicer to donate to special care babies

I think this is a fantastic thing to do - my nephew was born at 28 wks (was in SCBU for 3 months but now doing great and will be 1 in July), and benefitted from donated breast milk until my s-in-law's milk came in. Something I would have loved to do had I ever had enough milk (never had enough for Jenna, nevermind donating as well)

My Mum did this for a little while after she had my sis, I can remember going out with her to collect milk from other ladies as she also did delivery to the local hosp, she was like the milkman in reverse! lol

I love the idea, might look into it since I cant donate blood for a while I might as well give something else away! Storage might be an issue for me though as we only have a tiny freezer... :?

I'd love to do this. My nephew was also born at 28 weeks and is now 1. He's such a fighter. I wonder if they do it round here.

Was only looking into this the other day as i have been expressing milk in the morning as i am quite engorged. It is no use to my little one as she refuses to take from a bottle so had a little nose at that site.

I think its a great thing, will have to give them a ring.

I phoned my local one, she asked a few questions about do I smoke etc and needs to check out the hayfever tablets that I sometimes take.
She's gonna call me back and have a proper chat later.

I did lots of research into this about 6/7 months ago as I was really keen but I was devastated to find that the only hospital accepting milk donations was in Glasgow and you had to live nearby to enable collection.

As far as I understand it, they'll collect the milk from your home and give you all the equipment you'll need - electric pump, steriliser, bags/bottles etc.

I was really disappointed to find that I couldn't donate due to location.

midna - your baby has to be under 6 months for you to begin donating.

Good luck girls - please keep us posted.

I did when Callum was in there

I was expressing loads at a time :)

I'm miles from the nearest 1. Dunno whether Cambridge or Birmingham are nearest but they're about a 2 hour drive!

I seem to have masses to spare so would happily do this :)

Alas there is nothing anywhere near me whatsoever

how lovely are you to think of other mums. my baby was born at 29weeks and spent 8 weeks in special care. i was lucky enough to express for 6 weeks however i could not go on any longer and i was totally gutted. It was heartbraking to see the prem babies and some were 25 weekers, im sure the parents in the units would be very grateful. x

That's a nice thing to say. How is your son now?

I'd have loved to done this when I was breastfeeding, I think it's a fantastic thing to do.

I'd love to but there's no milk bank anywhere near me - I live in Notts, miles away so I'd doubt they would collect and it would be too far to drive reguarly. I'll ask our midwives to see if anything does happen locally, just in case.

None near me either - am already looking into setting up a local scheme for our hospital. HV said it was a good idea but it might already have a scheme so need to ring them.

I think this is a great thing - I can still remember when my mum left milk bottles out at the front door and they came to collect it! Obviously they wouldn't do it quite that way now but it's still a great thing to do. I also don't live close enough to donate but did ask my HV about it x

He is doing very well thanks. Looking at him now its hard to believe that he was once 2ib 14 oz, He feeds well and is putting on weight each week.He is now just over 5 months and i am loving each day with him .Its amazing how quickly the prem babies progress considering what he went through in special care. Its thanks to this forum that i can read and share the experiences which helps me as a first time mum too!!
