Hi ladies,

Is anyone consultant led that could shed some light on how it works and what happens?

When I had my 8 week booking in appointment, the midwife said I might be consultant led due to recurrent miscarriage, booked me in for an early scan at Epu due to bleeding at 8 weeks and says to ask them about it. However at Epu they didn't seem to have a clue why I was there, had to start from scratch explaining and they didn't say anything about getting referred to a consultant.

I've also had hyperemesis that has got worse and worse, and only just been diagnosed when I was hospitalised last week I was in a different area hospital from the one I'm booked in under, the staff midwife there said I should be under consultant care and to speak to my midwife about it.

So back to square one, I have my 16 week appointment with my midwife tomorrow, would it be her that would refer me to the consultant? I'm so confused by the whole process, I have no experience of hospitals etc never been ill in my life until now!

It was my midwife at my booking in appt who told me I would be consultant led. At that same appt she rang the hospital and got me booked into an appt in his clinic.

I am for same reason... literally nothing different so far. I had a consultant appointment with my 12 week scan, but all she said was carry on taking aspirin and I'll see you next time.. :/ nothing since. My new midwife wanted to stop me seeing one, I was like no! Although nearly half way and still totally clueless as to what they do lmao.

hiya!

i have one and they are just there for extra support etc, i have had to have growth scans not planned and my consultant talks to me after them regarding what they are going to do going forward etc, i may be induced at 37 weeks due to him being small.

i would guess you would be consultant led due to your angel babies - the midwife should have refereed you on your booking in appointment- i saw my first consultant at 13 weeks but mine is due to anxiety and depression and an eating disorder but now she is there for my reduced movements and slow growth

xx

Thanks ladies, they've said they'll just to wait and see how things are when I get past 20 weeks as this when they would start monitoring more with consultants anyway, so I just said ok. Got to hear baby on Doppler for the first time so that was a relief!

pb I thought you were but I couldn't remember if you'd said you weren't anymore when you moved x

Leigh I hope they are taking care of you x

they are being fab - getting a growth scan every week going forward - next one on wednesday and will see what they need to do to get him here :)

I'm consultant led too. So far I've not even met my named consultant (and I'm 34 weeks). I've seen another consultant once, at I think 28 ish weeks when we had a growth scan, for about 5 mins and he basically said exactly the same as the midwife I had seen 10 mins before hand so seemed a bit pointless. I guess they do more if they find any issues.

I was shared care last time and had some of my appointments at the hospital instead of with the midwife. I never actually saw the consultant (it was always a junior/trainee) until 37+3 when they offered to induce me and I didn't know what to do. Other than that i would never have seen her. She did review my notes each time I saw a junior as they always to go away and consult with her during the appointment. I'm midwife led this time and it's a lot easier x

I'm consultant led this time around, for high BP and risk of pre-eclampsia. As mine is usually in late pregnancy, I don't think I see anyone until 20 weeks at the earliest. My hospital didn't have a clue either when I asked at 12 week scan, but 20 week is a consultant appt according to notes. What they'll do from there though I don't know

I'm same as Kumber - had pre eclampsia previously, so have been put on aspirin and got a consultant appt at 20 weeks. Not going to make much difference as my pre eclampsia came out of nowhere at week 36! I'm not sure what will happen from there either...

Do you mind if we keep each other updated? It's something I really worry about as I've been lucky previously - I had high BP that didn't quite go over to pre-eclampsia - but I'm really worried about it this time as BP has gotten higher in each pregnancy

Yeah that's fine.
I never really had constant high blood pressure, it was always top end of normal though, and baby always measured a bit small. At my 36 week mw appt, I had incredibly high blood pressure and protein in my urine. I got induced that day as I developed hellp syndrome that meant I was in the early stages of organ failure - that is quite rare though!
They don't seem massively worried about me - I think nearer the end I will get a blood pressure machine and keep an eye on it. My mw said aspirin can really help, so I'm on 75mg a day xx

I'm shared care due to my recurrent mc and a few other issues. I saw my first midwife at 5 weeks and she booked me in at the consultant at 7 weeks she ordered an extra scan at 10 weeks on top of my recurrent mc ones. I have had more scans in 1st tri and my consultant helped me with my hyperemesis. Then asked to see me at 20 weeks I have had extra scans in 3rd tri to check growth and placenta flow etc as they were worried that caused my losses and sons low birth weight. She's also helped refer me to a specialist cardio and done some additional blood tests and a few swabs. But I must say I'm totally lucky my hospital is one of the best in the country and I am half way between two hospitals I was lucky I got to choose. My friend hasnt she's with the other hospital and winded up being consultant led due to an infection in baby and she feels completely let down and in the dark. So it Def varies place to place.
