* Is a water birth dangerous for the baby? What if the baby suffocates?

The baby is surrounded by water in the womb, and it isn't until it stops getting oxygen from you through the cord that it actually needs any other way to breathe... so underwater for a short time it's actually fine - in effect it's just like a much wider fuller womb. It's only after it takes it's first breathe of air when it comes up from the water that it's lungs start to function as lungs should. So if you then submerge it in water after it's started its lung function then it would drown.

Sorry, I didn't look that up I worded it myself so hope that makes sense - it may be worded a bit badly!
