I have a series of questions that I have never found an answer to: (some of these questions might sound stupid but I genuinely don't know the answer!)

* How can babies breathe through the amniotic fluid?

* When they swallow the amniotic fluid, isn't the taste a bit too acidic for them? after all it's body fluid.

* Is a water birth dangerous for the baby? What if the baby suffocates?

* How can they open their eyes when without discomfort, when they're surrounded by so much fluid. Doesn't it sting?

* Why can't babies cry inside the womb?

* For babies who poo inside the womb just before the birth, isn't it a bit dangerous for them to remain inside the womb, they could still swallow some of the fluid and poo

How can babies breathe through the amniotic fluid?

During the first trimester of your pregnancy the placenta, amniotic membranes and your own circulation produce fluid to fill the amniotic sac as your baby grows. At this stage, your baby will swallow the amniotic fluid, filter it through his kidneys and pass it out again as urine. Recycling starts much sooner than people think! Your baby also excretes some fluid from his lungs. Any excess fluid will be absorbed through the amniotic sac or via the umbilical cord, maintaining an ideal balance of fluid for your growing baby.

This is all I could find......

Baby's don't breathe inside you - you do that for them

The amniotic fluid tastes of things you have eaten - eat lots of sweet things and baby will gulp down the fluid and get hiccups!!

Baby will not suffocate in a water birth.
You are still breathing for them until they are fully delivered.

Amniotic fluid is designed for the baby to live in - it isn't acidic so won;t sting their eyes

They can't cry as they're lungs are full of amniotic fluid

Baby's generally poo at the last minute during labour so it doesn't usually cause a problem

Hope this helps hun - they are just taken from what I think I know :rotfl: so aren't 100% accurate

I had hears something about them being able to.

Seems a bit odd - even if they could - thankfully it would be muffled by the amnio fluid :rotfl:

I know like it's not enough they kick you awake at night but cry while they're doing it. Although I think Jordan & Macaulay's was more of an evil laugh

the crying thing: I've read that they do but we don't hear it beacuse there's no air in the womb, just like no one can hear you scream in space beause there is no air to carry the sound. I'll try and find the link

I'm also ansure as to how they do it... there's fluid in their lungs, how do they make a noise? The vocal chords work by air rushing through them
Unless they work with fluid going through them...

LOL

Thanks laetitia - you've made my head hurt!!! lol

Oooo that remined me of the film Alien...........In Space No One Can Hear You Scream

they wouldnt be able to produce a crying sound, you need air to pass over the vocal chords for that to happen but it seems all the muscle reflexes are there.

poor baby on the video, I hope the nasty scientists didnt scare them too much :(

I know it was a bit mean wasn't it? :?

What they are doing is exercising and developing the muscles that will help them to cry - just like kicking in the womb. They're not crying cos they're upset or anything.

pooing in the womb - when your waters break - your mw will check that they are clear - if they're green tinged, then the baby has pooed and they will then speed up the delivery as they baby could be in distress. Does happen but completly manageable

I'm not a geeky scientist and I thought you needed air to pass over (ok I thought through but who cares!!) the vocal chords to produce sound

Can you really not scream in space?

sound is actually vibrations in the air. No air, no vibrations, no sound.
So not just talking (vocal chords) you wouldn't hear any sound, explosion or anything.

You do need air :D

Was it my answer that confused you  I meant they aren't even trying to cry cry (with or without sound) they're just moving the same muscles that make their mouths open and on video could look like crying

I got you libs ;)

But then I could just understand crazy talk :moon: :moon:

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Love ya really
