So, I had a call from my GP today about the blood tests they took at my 12 week scan appointment. Naturally I panicked right away but he was calling to say I'm severely anaemic. He's prescribed double dose iron tablets for a month and if that doesn't help, I'll need to go and get injections. I guess that explains my extreme tiredness and sudden craving for red meat!
Fingers crossed the tablets start working soon, tho not looking forward to the inevitable side effect of constipation....I'm already struggling in that area....sorry TMI ladies.

Is anyone else having to take iron tablets?

i am meant to but refuse to take them as it hurts so much already when i go loo. best thing stick with them but have lots of pure orange juice to help your bowels x x x

I was put on them but stopped taking them because a) they made me sick, b) they made me horrifyingly constipated and c) I was doubled over in pain with the indigestion they caused.

I just take spatone now, which isn't a high dosage but its all I can manage x

I am on iron tablets, was already consitpated but now theyve had the opposite effect on me and make me go x

For now the iron in Pregnacare is getting me by. I used to be anaemic so I know what signs to look out for, and can usually be remedied by an uptake in the red meat department. Apparently brocolli is good too but I hate it unless it's in soup or pasta!!
I'd stick to the high dose just now to get your count up, then maybe you can get away with a change in your diet or spatone as jayjay suggested xx

Thanks girls. I've never been anaemic before, so just put down the excessive tiredness and pale complexion down to being pregnant. I've started eating red meat (I didn't before) so hopefully that will help maintain my levels once the tablets bring them back to normal.

Spinach is also meant to be really good for iron too if you girls can eat that? I usually have big mushrooms toasted with some steamed spinach on top and then melted cheese on top a couple of times a week as most of the food that's full of iron I dont like!!busually a bag of spinach I can put between 4 giant mushroom and me and oh have two each!!

When I'm having a low day and need an energy boost I make a lovely big bowl of my warm spinach salad.

Fry some red onions, in a wok, then add some chopped mushrooms, finish with loads of spinach till its wilted. Just before serving, add a dollop of creme fraiche and mix it in.

Its gorgeously yummylicious!

My friend is 9 months and her dr told her she needed them i think its quite common in pregnancy but they recommend taking them with Orange Juice as the Vit C helps your body absorb the iron xx

im on 3 200mg tabs a day dont know if thats high or not? but was told am very anaemic. which was causing dizzyness and palpitations have to take them for a month! but this week ive not taken them all as had some bleeding so want to wait til it settles down. it made me looser the first week but now am royally bunged up! at least we are in the same boat as many others! lol

Have a look at this link, some good iron rich foods to take along side your iron tablets to give you a boost. Hopefully if you boost enough you'll be able to either cut down or cut out the iron tablets. Make sure you have plenty of vitamin C as it helps with iron absorbtion plus eat anything that will help with the dreaded constipation!!

And thanks SoObsessed, will take a wee look at that site and see what else might help.
