So my story:
Had a nap Boxing Day (after getting up at 5 for next sale ) and when I got up felt a gush and knickers were soaking. I was convinced id wet myself but oh saw sense and convinced me must be waters ( it was leaking down legs and onto floor) anyway went to maternity assessment unit and she examined me and confirmed they had gone and Id need to be booked in for induction at 7:30 am the next morning. At this point I had no pains just crampy period style stomach ache.

Got home at 4pm and took Xmas tree down and tidied up, at this point my stomach was aching but it didn't feel bad enough to be anything ... Just like bad period pains. (I was convinced nothing would happen before induction at 7:30am). I then did the ironing! As I had worn my coming home outfit on Christmas Day. While I was ironing I was on the phone to my sister and telling her when these cramps were stopping and starting. (Approx 10 mins apart) She was timing them and both sister and mom were telling me I was in early labour .... I wasn't convinced!

By 10pm cramps were worse, but still didn't think they were contractions. Went to bed at 10:15 when 'cramps' were lasting 40 seconds every 6 mins. Couldn't sleep or get comfy and by 12:00 I phoned hospital as I'd been timing them and they were now 4 minutes apart. Midwife told me to monitor for the next hr. I think because I held a conversation with her she didn't think it could be labour .

By 1:30am walking around wasn't comfy and lying flat was agony, I just Kept feeling like I wanted to sit on the toilet, but when I did it was like I wanted to push (I was scared as still didn't think I was having proper contractions) so at 1:30 Am I phoned the hospital again and to be honest when I spoke I exaggerated as though I was really struggling breathing though it .... Also mentioned leaking waters were now bright red (which they were) she said to go in.

Got to the hospital at 2am and put into room , midwife said she wouldn't examine me (as waters had gone and I risked infection) and that when feeling my stomach contractions were not happening at the top yet ..... I honestly thought great, bet I'm about 1cm and will end up here getting checked every hour before induction starts at 7am.

Anyway by this point she said she would leave me an hour and see if anything progresses as I looked 'comfy' with the 2 paracetamol and codine she had given me. Walking around wasn't comfy and I tried tens machine but hated it! I just tried to really focus on breathing slowly in and slowly out. She kept popping in and I said I keep feeling like I need a wee .... She said go have one, and when I tried to wee I was getting urge to push between strong contractions..... Which scared me as I remember reading not to push until your told to! I stayed pretty calm, but do remember being in the bathroom thinking if When she checks I am only 1cm and have to get to 10 I don't think I can take it (this was my one wobble, but I gave myself a talking to in my head) at 3am ish I was sat on the edge of the bed and said I'm worried as I feel like I need to push .... Ok she said Ill examine you to see if your dilated.

So she returns and checks me at 3:15 and I will never forget this .... 'Oh my you must have a really high pain threshold. ..... What would you say if I told you your cervix is completely dilated and I can see your baby's hair!!! ...... As and when your body tells you to start pushing! !'

So for the next 41 minutes I did (didn't have gas and air as it wasn't in the room at this point), she brought it in, but said 'somehow I don't think your going to need this' I just pushed for the next 41 mins .....towards the end I had a midwife holding each leg and apparently my oh tells me they were pouring water over my bits. (I don't remember this, but maybe that's why it wasn't burning too bad as babys head came out .... As I had read this bit should sting like a b**ch) They did have to cut me as at the last stage as baby's heart rate dropped. I was asked if I wanted to touch babys head but I said no as I was concentrating hard on pushing! During the 41 mins of pushing it wasn't constant and I was having conversations between pushes (I remember telling her the story of when I had my appendix out years ago and they too commented on high pain threshold)

Oh cut the cord and we both looked at the placenta (she broke it open and explained the parts!)

So at 3:56am baby Poppy arrived weighing 7lb 2.5 oz .... It was so surreal .... I cried and then remember saying 'this is ridiculous' as it all happened so quickly! .... I'll never forget the clubbing music playing on the radio .... Not exactly relaxing giving birth music!
