Did anyone see the man from the Terrance Higgins trust saying that same sex marriage should not be taught in school. He says it's unnatural, bad for children to hear about, children will be led astray etc.
He says that if his son came out as gay, he would tell him it's unnatural and lead him away from it.
I'm speechless that there are still people with this opinion in this day and age. It's quite sad I think.
What do you think? x

I didn't see it but that sounds shocking. If my son came out as gay he would get nothing but love and support from me and my husband. My husband is a devout Christian as well, we didn't even live together until we were married etc. But we have had this conversation as one of my best friends is gay and in a civil partnership with a fantastic man and they are both treasured friends, and I wanted to make sure that OH would be ok with it if MJ were to take this path in life. 100% fine.

Being led astray?! Like it's something you coerced into. What an idiot. Might look this up on iPlayer.

I'm not shocked by his opinion as it was the opinion the church I used to go to tried to force upon me when my sister came out. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm sure he'd be as offended by us thinking it's acceptable as we are by him thinking it's unnatural. It's just unfortunate that he said these things in such a public way. Did they offer a counter view?

Yes. There was a lady on there who was a mother who is for teaching this subject in school. She was horrified (as were Phil and Holly).
It was just a foreign opinion to me. I surround myself with open minded people and I truly thought that opinions like this were the minority. I'm naive obviously x

Its sad but many religious books are full of homophobia, msyogeny, torture etc and its unpalatable but until people turn their backs on following such - in my opinion - vile teachings and thereofre give these powerful establishments the heave ho then there will be people like him to damage children.

Who you love so long as its consensual is entirely up to you. Its more important to belive in yourself and reject anyone who is trying to tell you how to think and act especially when it will make you unhappy.

Free speech however means that we have to listen to such BS.

I'm not surprised either.

My grandparents think this. They are fundamentalists (strict Christians).

The strange thing is, they are the nicest people ever - they wouldn't ever voice that opinion though, and if a family member came out they wouldn't disown them or anything.

It just goes to show how much of a grip religion can have on reasonable people.

My grandparents are lovely, caring people. But honestly, their views are so warped, and it's really sad.

I know that lots of older people feel like this, I always thought that was a generational thing. Oooh we didn't stand for that in my day etc. but this guy was young!!! Like in his 30's!!!!
I mean come on now, he must have lived a very sheltered life x

Not necessarily. The church I used to go to, the vicar was late 30s, his wife was the same and the youth minister was early 20s and they all held this view. The silly thing is that Jesus doesn't actually mention anything about being gay and the church I went to strictly followed Jesus' teachings.
And I wasn't brought up having a sheltered life but apart from my sister I've never known an openly gay person! I have no gay friends etc. obviously I don't share his opinion but I just wanted to point out that you don't necessarily have to have had a sheltered upbringing to hold that opinion.

There are also plenty of 'religious' people who don't hold views anything like that. One of the churches in Aberdeen has a gay minister, and his congregation were more than happy for him to stay after he 'came out'
X

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

I suppose it's just people's minds then isn't it. You can't put it down to age, religion or upbringing x

Oh absolutely! I would class myself as Christian but I completely disagree with the mans opinion and have no problem with people who are gay!

I think you're right in a way cosmic, in the same way we have our own opinions on music, clothes, religion, politics, children etc it's down to how we think. However I do think that upbringing and experiences influence our opinions.

I'm exactly the same Helen, I class myself as Christian, I have a number of gay friends, and at recently have found myself wondering if there's anything wrong with gay marriage - something a vast number of Christians disagree with even if they have no probs with gay
Relationships.

"Jesus doesnt actually mention anything about being gay" Not quite true, Leviticus 18:22. I am religious so don't agree with homosexuality but I'm not homophobic! Hate the sin, not the sinner, I have three family members who are gay and whom I love dearly, always will, they know i don't agree with their lifestyle but they respect my opinion as I respect theirs. Nothing against gay people it's just a right to opinion and free will, like some people agree with smoking, where as from a religious stand point to me, it doesn't show respect for the life god gave you, but I don't hate smokers etc. just an example. Everyone is entitled to their opinion

"Jesus doesnt actually mention anything about being gay" Not quite true, Leviticus 18:22.

Except Leviticus isn't the word of Jesus. And there are numerous debates over accurate translations of this particular passage. X

Yes there are, but to me, it's pretty clear, as is romans 1:26,27 but that is the beauty of free will and opinion and interpretation. Really not out to offend anyone just we are all allowed an opinion arnt we x

I don't really think homosexuality is a lifestyle :/
Lifestyle is a choice, sexuality cannot be chosen.
My kids already know that people can fall in love with anyone. It doesn't matter what gender, colour, race or religion, as long as you love and respect them and they feel the same about you xxx

Tapatalking excuse any typos!

Actually neither Leviticus or Romans are the words of Jesus Christ. So my point of Jesus not mentioning it stands.

I agree. I don't see being gay as a choice. Xx

Yes it's not Jesus actual words but the entire bible is written by men, inspired by God. But if that particular church only goes by the parts in the bible Jesus said then that's up to them.
