Has anyone been diagnosed with anaemia? How were you treated & did it work? MW has told me I'm anaemic, which explains my tiredness etc. just wondering if iron tablets will work

Tablets should help if you've been prescribed them but you can improve iron levels with diet too, which is apparently less likely to cause unwanted side effects like constipation. Have a google of iron rich foods and try to eat more of them if you can - red meat and certain fish I think and green leafy veg, dried apricots, nuts, beans, lentils and a load of other random foods. You can find some good iron rich recipes on Pinterest too xx

Yep me I have low iron this pregnancy...I was put on ferrous fumarate just over a week ago but stopped taking them as it made me really uncomfortable with constipation...I've jsut picked up a script for ferrous gluconate on a lower dose to see if that helps and doesn't irritate my stomach/bowels as much. I've also been eating more cereals, spinach, hard boiled eggs and red meat...vit C is irons friend as it helps the absorption of it. Unfortunately ant-acids are not irons friend and neither is asprin (I don't think) which sucks cause I've had to have both for keeping bp under control and heartburn. Hope you're not feeling too crappy and weak. I've felt awful today :( waiting for these new iron tablets to kick in

I had it with my last pregnancy and with this one. I'm on a much higher dose this time but as long as I take them religiously they have helped. If I don't take them I do feel it.
Like others have said, you can adapt your diet too.

I always have it esp towards the end and get iron tabs but end up not taking them due to constipation.

My iron is fab this time and nice and regular normal poos ( sorry tmi )

Go and buy a box of large size weetabix chocolate , i eat three at night to stop me being hungry when i wake up and another 3 for breakfast with skimmed milk. They are low fat, fortified with vits and minerals inc the lovely iron and have choc chips in so feel really naughty ;)

I had it last time and it was horrible so I really sympathise. You can drink spatone too which is fab, I'm planning on getting some for the next couple of weeks to see me through birth and afterwards as last time I was anaemic for months post delivery too which made everything that little bit harder! Drink lots of on, eat your greens and chomp that steak!

Ugh I'm anaemic - but I'd rather have anemia that is quite common in end of pregnancy than the constipation etx that comes with taking iron tablets

Try increasing leafy veg and iron rich foods - take iron tablet with vitamin C - as that helps absorbency - maybe a glass of OJ etc

What were your readings/levels?

Not sure what my readings are, will they be in my notes? Don't feel weak just lots more tired than normal & running out of steam.,I already suffer with constipation (sorry tmi), so I'm nervous about taking the iron tablets unless they make a big difference! Will definately try supplementing diet with iron rich foods etc..

Don't forget the spatone either, it was great for me so I'd say give it a shot xx

I feel your pain. I've taken myself off them For the second time ( did in 1st pregnancy ) made my pooh black and was sore when trying to pass :(
