I really dont know what happened during my labour and birth, but here goes....
I started having contractions on the Monday about 10 mins apart. On the Tuesday morning about 3.30am my waters broke, or so I thought! Contractions got closer together and were 5 mins apart all day. We eventually called the MW at 1am to see what was happening. She examined me, 2cms dilated and waters still intact. My hind waters had broken! She then referred me to the hospital as not much was happening and if nothing else progressed during the night I had to be at the ante natal ward for 9am Wednesday morning for induction.
We got to the hospital, a MW examined me ready to give me a pessary. She decided against it as I was now 4cms. We went for a walk to see if that got things moving. Which it didnt and I had to wait to go down to the delivery ward to go on a drip. DH got sent home as visiting hours were up. At 4.45pm a nurse came to escort me to delivery. DH was on his way for visiting again.
MW finally broke my waters and contractions started to get stronger but no closer together. I got put on the drip and the the pain really kicked in. I managed without pain relief up until I was 6-7cms, then I discovered the gas and air. This is where it gets hazy.....
All I remember was properly tripping out on G&A , I managed to go thru a whole canister. Then I gave in and had pethidine. Thats when things started to go wrong. The next part is what I've been told happened.....
All my bits swelled up and the doctors said it was an allergic reaction to latex!! I doubt that very much! I got given an enema Dont remember that at all!! I was also not getting enough water inbetween G&A so I had a saline drip, aswell as the induction drip and a penicillin drip!!
The last stage I remember very clearly. The doctor came in and said that if the baby wasnt out in 30 mins I would be in theatre for tools or section!! I did not want a section! Thats when I pushed for Britain!! A few mins later a 2.17am on Thursday 27th October Alice came into the world.
The little monkey had also turned during labour and was back to back, laying on the cord and slowing her heart rate. The MWs had to step in and cut the cord and get oxygen into her quickly. Because of all the swelling I had, she was born with a bit of a cone head, but that soon went.
I suffered with a second degree tear and had to be stitched in the delivery room. Normally they would have taken me theatre to do it.
I'm still sore but I did it!! We have a beautiful daughter and we are very lucky!!
