So whilst my little scamp is on the boob I thought id write up my birth story!
I had been losing plug for 5 days and given up hope of baby coming soon, when on Friday night/Saturday morning I had a show with blood. Pretty much as soon as this happened my BHs became slightly stronger - not enough to be painful but enough to be 'different' if that makes sense. Decided to go to bed and see how things went.
Tightenings/contractions got stronger and at 3am I decided to get up as there was no way I'd be sleeping through these haha! Pretty much right after I got up, a contraction hit and it broke my waters pretty explosively haha - ran to the loo like a loony and managed to avoid getting any on the couch.
At this point contractions started getting a fair bit stronger and were now 4-5 mins apart lasting about 45 seconds.
Decided to call triage for advice (only because waters had gone and not sure what protocol was for that!) who told me to do the usual - take paracetamol and monitor.
An hour later I rang back to let them know that I was coming in, as things seemed to be progressing pretty quickly and I had intended to labour in the pool, and the hospital is a 45 minute drive away.
Arrived at 6am to be told that although contractions were every 4 minutes lasting a minute I "didn't look in enough pain", I wouldn't be examined as waters had gone.. and to go home.
Left hospital at 7.30am and by 8.30 and just home!!) I started feeling pressure with my contractions and turned around and went straight back to hospital. Called on the way to be told that I should take paracetamol (already done) and take a warm bath. Bath was the last thing I wanted so told them I would be coming back whether they liked it or not.
Arrived on the MLU 9.30am to find another midwife (the first had finished her shift thank god) to who I explained what was happening (contractions now every 3 minutes lasting 90+ seconds). Was in a fair bit of pain and breathing like a a lunatic but could still talk.
This is the fun bit - she examined me and was poking around for a while. She then declared that that there was no cervix left at all around baby's head and to "push if the urge strikes me" for an hour. So I got my gas & air (lovely stuff) and push I did (no water birth for me
). An hour (apparently, this seemed about 5 minutes to me) later we started actively pushing and the midwife asked me to come off the gas & air if I could for this part, which I did.
I actively pushed for about half an hour and then at 11.29am Alexander Graham was born!
My little scamp weighed in at 6lbs 11.5oz and was born 2 days before his due date.
He's perfect and despite a few latch issues on day 1 and 2 he's now feeding like a champ. I'm so proud of him and love being a mummy!
