I live in the country and we have all chosen to have our own CCTV installed (and I know it's totally different cos it's personal choice) but I feel it does offer some comfort.
I totally understand the "big brother is watching you" concerns, however, the camera operators don't look out for the normal day to day things, it's suspicious things that spring to their attention. And I can tell you that in 9 times out of ten CCTV provides vital evidence for crimes and also for locating missing people. I totally agree that we shouldn't have to have it, but some people in society dictate that it is a necessity. Not only can it help for clues if an offence is committed, but it deters people from committing offences in the presence of CCTV monitored areas. We had a large scale event on for work and a child went missing and was detected via CCTV operation, his parents were thankful for it, but it wasn't in a problem hotspot area. I can see both sides of the debate to be honest, but as I said it's a sad fact - we SHOULDN'T need CCTV or other monitoring to invade privacy, but with the kind of people in this world (few and far between I know) IMHO we do need it.
