Packing bags should happen... Whenever you feel like it should happen.
I think last time I had both bags (mine and baby's) packed at about 30 weeks.
Buying stuff should also happen whenever feels right to you. Last time, I was buying from 12w on, just grabbing bargains off local Facebook page, or, shop sales, or just stuff I liked and wanted to get there and then.
I've been on a mission this week as we wanted to get stuff together, and not wait until the end of June to do so, so, last week we had nothing, this week, baby stuff is pretty much complete. Just a few bits to pick up for me.
Her hospital bag is her new change bag. It's got:
- Travel change mat (came with bag)
- Nappies
- Wipes
- Nappy bags
- Clear zip-lock bag for any "accident-covered" clothes
- Metanium (the only bum cream worth getting, IMO)
- Five vests
- Sleepsuit
- Three "outfits"
- Hat
- Scratch mitts
- Nightgown
- Blanket
- Baby "grooming kit" (Tommee Tippee have one pre-done with hair brush, tooth brush, nail scissors, nail file (all pointless at this age) nail clippers (could be needed) and a booger-sucker (invaluable)).
- Two bottles (prob won't be needed as hospital supply the tiny formula bottles if needed but OH wanted to have them in there).
Bits you may not think of, especially as a first time mum, but that I found I couldn't live without...
- Get a booger-sucker. You'll need it.
- Dentinox cradle cap shampoo. I washed DSs hair with this (use on scalp if no hair) every other day for first couple weeks, then twice a week for couple months. He never even had a flake of cradle cap. (If you don't know what that is, google it).
- A pot of snuffle-babe (baby vicks). Of all stupid things, smear it on the soles of their feet and put light socks on for bed.
- Baby olbas oil. You're not supposed to give them olbas oil for like three months because their nose is sensitive. I bypassed this by buying a cheap oil-burner from the pound shop, putting a tea light in it, putting hot water in the top each night with a few drops of baby olbas oil. I'd do this before starting bedtime routine, so it had half hour to float around the bedroom before bed time, then replace the tealight before I went to bed to keep it going through the night.
- Metanium. I know I keep on, but it's different to other nappy creams like sudo or bepanthen. Those are creams that seep away. Metanium is oil based or whatever, so it literally creates a barrier to stop liquid coming into contact with the skin (I compare them as sudo/etc feeling like yogurt, and metanium feeling like butter, if that helps explain).
- Baby calpol/nurofen. You can't use them until three months, but, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
Most babies end up having snuffly nights in the first few weeks, not because of a cold, but because they're still getting used to breathing real air, and they still gotta learn how to clear mucus. They only breathe through their nose for the first few weeks, not their mouth, so a blocked nose can be super-annoying for them.
I have work in four hours.
I have no idea why I'm awake.
Going back to sleep, hopefully, for a bit. Xx
