...my OH and I dtd every evening from CD8 right through to day CD17? (This is the plan this month).

I'm CD12 today so on the brink of OV. I don't use OPKs or track OV at all any more but I did used to occasionally take OPK tests and the only strong positive I ever got was on CD15 of a regular 27 day cycle about 3 months ago.

Can anyone give me any advice or share their experiences?

You can't get pregnant without doing the deed! So it's a good start. Try not to become too regimented with it though, you don't want sex to just become about babymaking..Having sex during your most fertile days sounds like a fine plan to me!
In fact I'd say you're more than in with a chance I think it's a great way as long as you're having fun trying!
