What to expect?

Hi all,

This is my first post in this section, I've just booked an appt with my gp to -hopefully- find out why I've never been able to conceive. It's been about 2 years now (3 years if you count ntnp) with no luck and I'm 30 years old. Lost 4 1/2 stone since last summer -hoping it'll help, but I don't want to wait any longer without knowing if there's something wrong with me or hubby.

Will see my GP next wednesday and I'm already very nervous but excited as well. What should I expect? Are they going to do a blood test or refer me to hospital for a scan? Roughly how long does it take to get the results and decide on the treatment, after the first appointment?

Also hubby is on antidepressants and has really.....really low sex drive so we don't really bd that often, 1 or maximum 2 times before ovulation (if I ovulate, ofc) and that's about it. Also they've just changed his medicine which helped his mood a lot but now he also has a problem sealing the deal (sertraline side effect). So if they just tell us to dtd every other day or something, that's impossible. Do you reckon they'd consider iui for this reason or are we on our own on that one?

:-(

Hello :)

First well done on your weight loss, what a great achievement.

I was really worried about my first gp appointment (mainly as I am terrified of doctors and all things medical) but I have to say it was fine. My doctor asked a few questions about how long we had been trying, if we took any medication and that was about it. She sent me for a blood test and got me an appointment for an ultrasound. Blood test was done the next day then I had to wait a couple of months for the ultrasound appointment then go back to the doctors 10 days later to discuss results. My husband didn't come to either gp appointment (as he works with family and I don't want to tell them yet) but if yours can I would recommend he goes. We have now been referred to the fertility clinic and we are waiting for the appointment to come through. We have been told that the fertility clinic will take a sperm sample and then we will go from there. Hope that helps give you an idea of timescale, it does seem that every area is different.

Thank you very much for the reply snowbee it was really helpful  So at least 2-3 months until the treatment starts - whatever it's going to be. I guess I could survive that wait! :) in the meanwhile I'll focus on shedding a few more pounds. Thanks again for the info and good luck on your journey xx :dust:

Hiya,

When I went to my GP they ordered day 21 bloods and an SA for my OH. I had already had swabs for infections and other bloods taken so there was no need to repeat these. I can't remember if I was sent for a scan as I had been having those anyway for other reasons so I am not sure. Once our results were back they sent the referral off to the hospital. I think we had a 6 week wait to be seen, possibly 2 months, cant really remember but it wasn't too long. I hope it all gets sorted for you soon x

Hi! The tests the others describe above follow a standard order and you don't usually have to wait too long to get to the next stage (see my signature!)

I would think that medication would definitely be a factor in having trouble conceiving especially as its such a lottery each time you try. And I think IUI would be an ideal treatment for you. As you've been trying for more than 2 years and are under 40 you should be able to get a couple of goes on the NHS.

Good luck!

Thank you all. I'm really looking forward to my first appointment. Scared as hell but very excited at the same time.
DH will see his gp tomorrow to ask if he could prescribe sildenafil for a little boost or change his medicine again (although they all have this side effect to a degree). He wants us to have a baby as much as I do, and it's really nice to see him doing everything he can to make this happen. I just hope there's nothing wrong with the spermies

Hey, I had my pelvic ultrasound followed by the 2-4 day and 21 day bloods, then gp arranged for hubby to have a SA (and then two more) and as they were all bad we were referred. Consultant ordered hsg which showed I have a blocked tube so now we're perusing private IVF as we already have a child. The order of tests seems fairly standard.

Would your hubby consider the occasional softcup donation? My hubby has major problems sealing the deal so we often rely on softcups, not very romantic but it guarantees we get more than one lot of sperms up there each month! Xx

Like the other ladies have said....I had my bloods done then OH had SA then referred to the fertility unit, where I was scanned and prescribed Clomid. They then followed from there but every Dr and situation is different. I know this will be hard but try not to think about TTC and just have sex when you both want sex. Then It might be less pressure oh your OH.

Congratulations on your weight loss, and being pro active. That will speed things up for you too :) good luck and let us know how you get on xxxx

 yea might as well.. actually we've talked about this before but didn't do it in the end for some reason.

It's me again, with another question! Is it ok to have a smear & triple swabs test during 2ww? I'm meant to have those done next Wednesday and I should be ovulating on Monday (well, hopefully).
