What is a sweep?

Without runnung the risk of sounding like a total duffer, what does the midwife actually do when you go for a sweep?

Sweeps round the cervix with her finger, I had one today and it was very slightly uncomfortable but thats all. Its best to be as relaxed as possible x x

Do you have to have one done or is it optional? Sorry im such a wuss, in labour anything will go, but not sure how I feel about being messed with before! x

You don't have to have one but it is worth a try, it might save u having to be induced and is really no big deal, so long as u relax, its over in a minute x x
