I know Monday seems like a distant memory now but finally got round to writing it all up.
This pregnancy was my third and after some additional growth scans due to my age I discovered our baby was breech. I decided I'd try seeing if they could turn the baby via ECV and leave things to run up to 40 weeks as that was the date I'd been advised to go up until with being an older mum - I'm 42. Unfortunately the ECV was unsuccessful and also painful but I provisionally booked in for a second attempt the following week. I had to have a scan on the 8/11 as a follow up to the earlier ECV and also to check the position of baby at that stage. Bubs was still breech but the doctor told me that her growth was starting to slow down and that they would recommend a section the following week.
I was a bit worried in case I went into labour over the weekend but was told I would be ok and that they would attempt a breech vaginal delivery if needed. I was secretly hoping I would last the weekend out. I had the pre-op bloods done on Sunday morning and was ready to go for Monday 11th November.
Unsurprisingly I had a poor night's sleep on Sunday 10th and was awake from 5am. I had to be at the hospital for between 7:30 and 8am. We arrived at the hospital for around 7:30. I had all my vitals taken and we were then just waiting for triage and to see if there were any emergencies that needed sorting first. Fortunately there weren't and I was really pleased to hear that I was first on the list.
By the time I went down to the anaesthetic room it was about 9:30. My OH had been led away to get his scrubs on. I was feeling scared as I had no idea what the spinal injections were going to be like and that was making me feel a bit frightened. It took three attempts to get a cannula in my hand so that wasn't a great start and proved to be a good distraction.
When they came to do the spinal injections there were going to be two: one for the initial 2 hour spinal and another for the epidural top up. The epidural wasn't playing ball and it took then three attempt to find a spot in my back that wasn't full of veins. Luckily on the third attempt they had success!! The spinal itself went in without the same drama. Then I was ready to go!
They laid me flat and told me that I would start to feel a tingling sensation in my feet. This gradually spread up my body and the anaesthetist checked various bits of my body were unable to feel a cold spray compared to and un-numbed area. After about 10 minutes I was numb up to the chest and ready to go. They put up a sheet to block the "view" and then it all started. As my hospital is a teaching hospital there were a few students who asked if they could sit in on the op and I was fine with that. The doctor commenced the op and was only a couple of minutes in when there was a bit of pandemonium. One of the students had passed out whilst trying to get out of theatre as she felt faint and had knocked herself out on a trolley in the way down to the ground.
Fortunately the op continued as planned. Within only about 5 minutes I could here a new baby crying. Our new baby Violet Crossley had been born at 10:22 weighing 7lb 9oz. They asked my OH if he wanted to cut the cord but he wasn't up for going it a go or he thought he might have passed out too! There seemed to be ages before Chris (my OH) brought our new baby girl over to my side of the sheeting so I could see her for the first time. She was gorgeous and I felt really quite emotional. I wanted to do skin to skin with her but because she was quite blue when she came out it wasn't an immediate option so we decided to save that for when we got back to the ward. Two doctors sewed my up which took a good half and hour during which time they were merrily chatting away about what they had been doing at the weekend which was rather surreal. Eventually I was all sewed up and was wheeled back to the maternity wars with Violet where we had the chance to get to know each other properly for the first time.
I couldn't believe it was all over! It was such a different experience to my previous two births but I was glad everything was OK and I had finally got to meet my little kick boxer! I was so ready for a drink though having not had anything to drink since 6
0am and the cup of tea that followed was the best ever!! xxx
