sorry not been on so much has happened well as you know i had thomas weds morning.
at lunchtime i was giving him a bottle and relised that when he opened his mouth up wide hes got a gapping great hole in the roof :( i was sure babies wernt born with it so i asked hubby he wasnt sure either i carried on feeding him but little bits of milk would come out his nose,
i got on the phone to my mum and she said its ok babies do have sick coming out there nose sometimes i dint think to ask about the hole.
anyways doctor come out to check us over (as i had a homebirth) and he says ah your son has a cleft palate :( he got straight onto the hospital and we were told to come straight in for obs as he might have to be feed threw a tube till its sorted.
i rang my dad and asked him if he could come and pick us all up and take us to hossie he was here withing 10 mins (its a 15 mins drive and he went to get petrol lol he was so worried bless him) anyways we get to hospital they have a look and ring up the specialists in salsbury they cant get to us till 11am tomorrow. thomas will have to have a feeding tube put in so he gets enough milk for now. it was horrible watching him being fed like that i couldnt stay in the hospital i had had 1 hours sleep since having him that morning so hubby stayed with him overnight and i went back at 6am after getting some well needed sleep.
specialist came out shes lovely gave us some special bottles and teats to help him feed better but its hard work as you have to make him drink so much in a sertain amount of time rather then what he wants to drink and when.
he will need an op in 6-9 months time to repair the hole but untill then we just have to del with it.
its not a huge issue we are thankfull its easily delt with.
oh and he needs to see the willy people as his pee hole is a tiny little bit off center lol poor might only 2 days old and all this going on.
well anyways apart from all that me and hubby are doing well i had my first poop today lol felt so good hahaha and my bowels dint fall out!!
will try to catch up on posts asap
huge congrats to everyone whos had babies and goodluck to everyone due/overdue or popping right now :)

Hey Manda,

Firstly congrats! :)

How did the MW manage to miss that he has a cleft palate? I thought with homebirth that they would check all of the same things that they do in hospital?

Thankfully it is something that is easily sorted though with an op and he sounds perfectly healthy otherwise!

Enjoy him xxxxx

Well at least mummy knew what was best and spotted it.

Poor you and OH, you must be shatterd.
Hope the little man is doing well.

Hiya Hun,

Firstly congrats on little Thomas!

My younger sister was born with a cleft palate. They discovered her's in hospital and she was in SCBU for a few nights. She didnt have the feeding tube, but she had some special bottles, cus of the hole she couldn't suck and the bottles had like a spoon on the end so the milk flowed into her mouth without her having to suck. She didnt have any problems gaining weight or anything. She had an operation at 9 months the stitch the hole back up at Stoke Mandaville Hospital which I think speciallises in cleft palate and lip. She was only in for one night and after that she used normal baby beakers and has had no problems since. She's now 16.

When she was being weaned onto solids, me and my brother used to find it so funny when carrots used to come back out of her little nose, but it goes to show that apart from the different bottles she was just like any other baby and was weaned at 6 months.

It must be awful having your precious baby in hospital and i'm thinking of you both. If you ever want to chat or anything please PM me hun and i'll try to help out!

awwww bless him, glad its gettin sorted, try not 2 worry 2 much and take care xx

Aww, sounds like he's getting all the right care now and you're obviously doing a fab job  Hope everything settles down for you now so you can enjoy being a Mummy at last!!

Congratulations Manda :cheer:

Sorry to hear about Thomas' cleft palate, its a good job you spotted it and that it can be operated on to correct it, still it must be worrying for you, im sure everything will be ok

Aww poor little love. Well done for spotting it, I can't believe the midwife didn't pick up on it, or that it wasn't picked up on your scans (I thought they checked especially for this?) Sounds like your doing a fab job with him

they cant pick up a cleft palate on a scan as its inside the mouth they can only detect a cleft lip which is when the lip looks sort of split you can have one or the other or both :)

thanks everyone
