Just after some basic info really.
Have no idea what I'll be entitled to, but I'm starting to think finances for after baby comes.
How much is child benefit? and how and when do I apply for working tax credit, I'm guessing I won't be able to claim working tax credit while on maternity leave??
Confused?!?

you can claim working tax on mat leave and child benifit is 20 a week for your first :)

Yeah basically I rang them to ask, I get 20 a week child benefit and 92 a week tax credits apparently! Because I'm on a crap wage anyway, and they go by last years earnings. You are still entitled to tax credits whilst on maternity leave because you're still employed by the company :) it's all very confusing though isnt it x

When can you start claiming these? Once the baby is born ?

you can only claim it during mat leave if ur over 25 or have at least 1 child already - i went and asked at the job centre as im on a rubbish wage atm as i cant do my second job whilst pregnant. Could be different to England though cos im in Cardiff x

Yeah in England you don't have to be on anything like that, wonder why it's so different x

i think you can claim working tax creds on mat leave,

you apply for child benefit when baby is born and registered
and once you have this in place you can then claim child tax credit to....

they wont let you claim child tax cred till you have child benefit. hope this helps x x

Thanks girls I was wondering when I could claim :)

Probably a daft question, but where do you claim from? Like do you ring up somewhere (if so who and where?!) or do you go into the job centre or somewhere in town?

I know for Working Tax Credit and Child Tax credit you can claim thru your jobcentre (but they lost my form) or direct by ringing the Tax Credits Helpline on 0845 300 3900 (they lost my form also, ha ha!!)

There is also a Child Benefit helpline - 0845 302 1444.

You don't need to wait till you are on maternity leave till you claim Working Tax Credit as it is based on last years income anyway.......but you do have to wait till after baby is born for Child Tax Credit

Aha, thanks AmandaPanda, will save that on my laptop now for later :)

if you look on net the phone numbers are on..........

first of you get baby registered (u av 4 weeks after birth but can do it at some hozzys to)- once you done that you ring up child benefit n get this benefit, then when u get confirmation that this has gone threw you ring tax credits up lol its just a process an about doing it at right stage but even if you dont they bk pay any thing you are owed

child benefit help line - 08453 021 444

tax credit help line - 0845 300 3900

they all on directgov or job center will help you, but i found it easier to go direct with them

If ur over 25 u can claim b4 u have children and if ur under u have to wait til after he/she is born. Based on last years income so doesn't matter if ur on mat leave or still at work xx

I have a 4 year old and earned 20k last year, my OH earned about 18 but the man at the tax credit office told me as I'm on mat leave my earnings will be slashed to just over 6k for the year so would be topped up??? I've been told several things to be honest so I'll just have to wait and see.

Thanks everyone! I'm not as confused about it all now :)
I think you should get more on maternity leave to make up for the reduced wage!
