Hi all

I have to have a planned ceserean due to the baby being delivered in the next 8 weeks - which is a very prem baby, not to surethe date yet but I know this is what the delivery will be

so I was just wondering if anyone has had to have a ceserean to deliver a very prem baby and what happens i.e does the baby and your OH go to the NICU or do they stay with you, when do you get to see the baby

Also just the genral details of what happens before, during and after the ceserean

thanks girls xx

no advice hun, just want to wish you all the best and hope everything goes well. xxxx

thanks lexi

I found out at my first 20 week scan there was hardly any fluid left in there and had to get a further scan at the fetal medicine unit in Glasgow and they said that the baby was so small and not growing so had an amnio to check for the 3 main chromosome problems they came back clear also had blood for the check if I had passed on a viral infection but they were clear so they think that the placenta isnt working properly, getting growth and doppler scans every monday to keep eye on growth and blood flow and when they think that the baby is better off out here rather than in there they will del and they have told me I def wont get passed 34 weeks and its safer for baby to do a ceserean as she is so small, im 27 weeks and she has been measuring around 24 weeks for the past 3 scans, and only grwoing a tiny tiny amount weekly. xx

Ahh Claire - it will be fine, a planned Section has alot of good points.

You know when it is happening in advance for childcare for your other one, you normally go in at 7am ish, no food after midnight, and then they do about three ladies per morning, unless an emergency lady comes in and the queue takes a little longer. If not, then one at 9am,10am and 11 am otherwise normally.
You get your spinal anestetic, like the epidural, only one shot. and it only takes 10 mons to get baby out, and then the other 40 ish to sew you up. Beacuse it's planned you can be awake for the birth, they can drop the screen (not all the way down) when baby is just about to come out, so you can see (don't worry no gory stuff).
They will shave your hairy bits alittle first, or you can do it the night before( I did, not all off mind, just 2 inches etc)
You will have a catherter inserted into your bladder, just for a day or so, to collect the wee, (it's fine, they do that when you can't see of feel anything!). They put wolley knickers (like a mans string vest on you), how they get them on with out you knowing is beyond me! and it holds the dressing on, and they are well coomfy.
You get a little scar along your pubic hair line, from one side to the other, and thhey do a lovely job, usually disolvable stiches nowadays, or ones that come out 5 days later.

my babies were not prem, only 38 weeks, but two went to scubu, I was cross as I didn't realise the first time that OH didn't go with bay, but stayed with me, but apparently they told him not to till they got baby settled and checked propely as can be a little distressing to watch, but all good for baby.

First time I remeber going doing to see him on a bed about 3 hours later, and then in wheel chair that eve too. They gave me a lovely polaroid to have with me on the ward so I could see him. So it can be a little emotional, but that's to be expected.

Second and third sections, I just got up that afternoon and walked about, I think I just went along with what I was told the first time, without realising I could actually get up myself!

You can go and see baby anytime you want in Scubu, just they keep visitors to a minimum and you have to wash your hands on way oin and out to keep germs at bay. ( you can't drive yourself for 4-6 weeks depending on car insureance company - gve them a call), so you wll need a lift or bus, this I found tricky as hubby was back to work in the second week

You normally can go home after 3-4 days if all ok after op, and then come and spend every day with baby sitting by the cot. they useaully have a flat, where you can stay if needed or stay with OH when your nearer taking baby home later on, so you can do a night, and still have support with you.

If baby too small to breastfeed, (they are really pro breast in scubu for preterms), you can express and they store in there fridge / freezer so baby can have your milk, when they are ready to start feeding, some times they just start with fluids first), and feed with nose tube that goes down to tummy, wikth a syringe. That way your keeping your milk going, baby gets your food only and your doing something for baby.

So don't worry, ask lots of questions about it, when you next go, it's really quite a controlled procedure X

I exp ect one of the really preterm mummys like mamafy will be able to help more with scubu

I have some lovely pics -

Ok so when they give you the spinal, and spin you round onto your back (your laid at a slant to one side , (they don't like to pop you right on the bit they put the drugs in apparently), once the screen is up, they do it then, so you don't even know it's being done, can't feel a thing. when they take it out, it's a little uncomfy, like a stich being pulled out, till pop out it comes, quite quick really , like a long tiny tube, but after nothing hurts, they just check with you when you have done a numb1 and numb 2 after (not literally check!) just to make sure all is ok.

Section does hurt, I won't lie, but you do get used to how to move, always with two legs at the same time, getting used to the hosp bed height, and never sit in the silly low armchair you always get by the bed! you can hold your tum to brace it, when you move or spin round in bed, but honestly you soon find out what hurts and what doesn't. After 5 days you really will feel quite human, and at 2 weeks wow. Hold tummy if choughing or sneezing at the time, to stop the sudden movement. Buy some big pants that don't have the elastic running right across the pubic hair line, which you can though away after.

Arnica tablets were good for bruising internally (boots I think), your tummy will feel quite numb for a good few months, and never quite be the same, but all fine. it's all the nerve damage when they cut through, never as bad second time tho!

Just take a few more nappies etc in with you as your will be in for a few more days that normal deliverys. I would buy a dark coloured nightie (with breatfeed type buttons (just incase of bleeds, as sitting in bed alot), (as the catherter, P'J's are no good really to start with.

make sure you have lots of big towels, as you will bleed the same as normal, but your stuck in hosp!

You can get lots pain relief if you want, tablets, ones up your bum, etc, to help, but I tried to not have them as then I could feel how far I was pushing myself and stop doing something that hurt.

anything else?

oooh and forgot , with the hosp food, I would opt for the lighter type of meals while your there, nothing like being bunged up when you have just had a section, im' sure those drugs slow you down too

so the cathetar goes in the side of your belly??? the pain killer up your bloody bum WTF pass with that lol

no more questions just now but you know me im sure i will think of some along the way lol, hope you dont mind sharing xx

Hiya,i think jj has covered all of it. My csection wasn't planned but was basically the same except my baby didn't need special care so he stayed wiv my hubby til I came out of recovery and then he was tucked in the bed with me. I had my catheter in for 12 hours and wouldn't have known it was there iykwim it was a bit uncomfy been taken out but only took 10 seconds, nurse told me to lay back and think of England!? Def agree wiv the big knickers,I went to tesco as soon as I was discharged and bought the biggest pair I could find (sexy, not!) lol. U soon get used to movin about but don't try and do too much too soon.
I drove after 2 weeks, rang my insurance who was fine wiv it and I felt fine doin it.

Sorry I can't help with the prem baby bits  xxx

The catheter goes up the urethra (hole u wee from). I only had 1 lot of suppositries that was put in my bum wen I was in recovery cos they forgot whilst I was in theatre xx

ha no sorry, didn't make that bit clear, it goes between your legs! (hence why you need a nightie and not Pj's!)

Sometimes you get a wound drain tho, a tube that hangs out the end of your scar stiches, for a few days, just to drain any excess blood, only needed if you really bled in surgery, better to get it out than stitch it inside! that comes out after a few days too, only had one once.

Dressing gown with large pockets is good, to hang your bag of wee and any bag of drain, i when your going to the bathroom, shower etc, less embarssesing with all the relatives for the other ladies turn up at visiting time ha ha

I have no experience and am not having an elective c-section but I just wanted to say thank you so much for asking this as I am terrified of having one and this info has helped so so much.

Claire, you're doing so well and getting as much positive info about things as possible is a great thing to do! I have no experience of having a baby prem but I was a prem baby and I'm absolutely fine and healthy. I was in scbu (or whatever it was called nearly 25 years ago) for 4 weeks, under a sun lamp (or whatever it is called) to help get rid of jaundice for two of the four weeks and went home around my 'due date'. I'm sure mamafy will be able to shed some light on what happens now in scbu x

Big hugs x

Claire, sorry to hear of your problems and hope that bubs says in for as long as possible!

JJ - Thanks for your post and what great photos!! I could have a section cause it's twins and certainly fear more reassured now!

iv said befor in another c sec thread my best advice is get in thos e disposable knickers that are like tights they are so comfy after a section rest as much as you can for few days after[obviously around your visiting] i loved the bum painkillers i find they work really well and dont make you constipated where as the cocodomaol they push on you can make you bunged up which is very uncomfy good luck xxxx

right I read this and actually crossed my legs, holy man alive thats sounds not good!!!! is the bag thing big will it fit in my pocket, so lets say I get the seserean in the am at 10 should the catheter come out at night then???

thank you all girls for writing just makes you seem a lit less stressed knowing what is going to happen or kinda what will happen xxx

I think it depends on u and the hospital...the hospital I was in had a rule were it had to stay in till day after delivery but cos my section was at 10pm it was out next mornin,b4 I'd even attempted to get up. My bag was just the night bag which was huge! But I used to b a carer and generally catheter bags hold approx 750ml.

Honestly it's nothin to worry about it just has to go in cos u've had a epidural so have no feelin of when u need to go til it's worn off. xx

Hope it didn't scare you claire, better to know about these things than to hazve a suprise on the day I think, I wish ~I did first time round, as it's too much for a head to take in at last moment!

I always get my bag of wee stuck to me for 3 days! I had previous bladder surgery, and so the nurses bottle out of taking it out till the consultant visits, and never been before 3 days! (It makes no difference either to my bladder, just to me!). So Ihave consultants on 15th this week, and will ask them to write in bold on my notes (can take out as normal 1-2 days etc, shes is fine!) ha well I hope anyway! (bet it never makes it from my mat notes to my hosp ones tho!).
