Singing Lessons - does anyone know anything?

I was thinking of asking my Hubs for a few singing lessons for my birthday. I love singing even though I am not exactly talented in that area and always have a good wail playing Singstar.

Basically I was wondering if anyone has any experience with singing lessons and whether you think they are worth it. Also how do you go about choosing a teacher, I had a quick look on t'internet and there were loads just in my area alone. Whats the average cost etc? Any pointers gratefully received.

It's not like I want to sing professionally, I just would like to improve a bit so I'm not too embarrassing

I've had singing lessons for 7 years now, I got my teacher by going to the music shop in town and asking who they recommended... They're worth having if you enjoy singing because they give you the confidence that you are improving more than anything else and before you know it you have improved a great deal

I do my grade 8 in the summer am more than a little nervous :/ lol
