Hi ladies,

So I'm almost 5wks pregnant and wondering if I should be taking a multivitamin? I am taking recommended dose of folic acid, and have been taking this for a few month while ttc. But I'm not sure if I need to take a pregnancy multivitamin alongside the folic acid. The midwife didn't mention anything when I spoke to her other than asking if I was taking folic acid.

What are your thoughts? And which do you recommend?

Folic acid and vitamin D are what you really should be taking if nothing else

Folic acid, vitamin d and calcium, which you can get in one, so only two tablets to take <3

Like the ladies above said, if you're taking folic acid and vitamin D, those are the most important ones. However if your diet is crap or you have food aversions because of morning sickness etc it might be worth taking a multivitamin so that you know you're getting the right amount of iron and vitamin C etc in your body.

I took pregnacare in my first pregnancy and they're horrifically expensive but said to be the best. I'm now taking the seven seas pregnancy vitamin this pregnancy which is soooo much cheaper and can buy in bulk on amazon.

They now recommend vitamin d in addition to folic acid.

I said this in the other thread but make sure you take a vitamin with folate/methylfolate instead of folic acid :) Congratulations!!

Knoll I’m interested in this, what vitamins contain those instead? What’s the benefit? I genuinely haven’t heard of it before x

I took a pregnancy multi because I couldn't stomach more than crackers/toast for tri 1. If you can continue eating your veggies etc then you don't really need the multivitamin on top of what you're taking already.

Rainbow - a small % of people can't absorb folic acid (which is a synthetic form of folate) so they need to take actual folate. You won't know if you're one of them so you're better off taking the folate. It costs more which is why most just do the folic acid.

Thanks winterwolf, how do you find the folate ones? I tried google but didn’t get too far x

I currently take pregnacare, only because it was on offer though! It inclues your daily dose of folic acid as well as other vitamins, I find it really does help with my energy levels (may be due to the iron it it) and also my digestive system isn’t so sluggish like it was in my last pregnancy, I’ve not had any bouts of constipation as of yet where as I did horrendously with my first. I put this down to the Pregnacare making me more frequent in my opinion, my diet isn’t the best either so feel more at ease taking an all round preggers vitamin! Suppose it’s just entirely up to you and what kinda diet you’ve got etc x

The only thing the midwife recommended was folic acid and vitamin d. She didn't see the need for anything more when I asked her at booking. I've been taking the Boots multivitamin at the moment as I got some sample packs but that's the only reason.

Right, what winter wolf said. Only, it may not be a "small" percentage - current estimation is up to 30% of the population may have a mthfr issue which means not only must you have methylated folate and b12, but also that you must AVOID folic acid. That's why it's doubly important to take folate/methylfolate. You don't JUST want the active form, you ALSO want to avoid the synthetic form (folic acid). For example, I have to avoid buying all enriched bread and pasta products (they are all enriched with folic acid) - usually the organic kind has flour that isn't enriched. Folic acid is freakin' everywhere!

I take "Naturelo" or "smarty pants" (the smarty pants ones are gummy vitamins and sooo yummy, but they do have sugar) prenatals. Seeking Health also has prenatal options, and they are at the forefront of gene research so whatever I get from there I trust. I also live in the US, so I don't know how easily available these are to you. But they're all on Amazon so you should be ok!

Hello I take the Seven Seas Vitamins pregnancy tablet. I’m currently 16W and still taking this. How long do you recommend I take it for or should I stop taking it?

It's most important to take it in the first 12 weeks, but there's no harm in continuing it throughout - the iron and vitamin d can only be beneficial. I'm still taking mine at 24 weeks.
