section - hospital bag

Hi everyone

I know this has been asked before but Im really confused at what to put in my hospital bag for a hospital stay after a section xx

This is my list:
For Hospital Stay:
q 2 x Nightdress (difficult to bend down and put pj bottoms on after section)
q Bathrobe
q Socks and slippers (preferably easy to slip on slippers so dont have to bend down)
q Toiletry Bag: Toothbrush/toothpaste/shampoo/conditioner/hairbrush/body wash/deodorant/moisturiser/lip balm/body spray (also included pack of flushable toilet wipes to freshen up once bleeding starts after delivery)
q Bath towel & Hand Towel (suggest dark colour towel as can be ideal to use on chair next to bed in case of leaks once up and about and doesnt show blood stains)
q Pen & notebook (to send hubby home with list of things to bring in/things to do)
q Magazines/Books (if you get the chance to relax that is)
q Mobile Phone
q Disinfectant Wipes (to wipe down changing areas, toilet seats, etc...I work in a hospital and they are not as clean as I would like so not worth getting an infection over)
q Nursing Bra and breast pads (Feeding Bra’s x 2/disposable breast pads/Nipple cream)
q Disposable or cheap underwear (anything you dont mind throwing away and will sit above incision)

q Sanitary/Maternity towels

Think I have most of my list packed ready, hope some of this might help

Ooh, I'm glad to read this as I'm also having section now. Problem though- my bag is full already!! Maybe 2 bags!

I never thought about taking the towels in! good point, and I think that im going to need 2 bags lol xx

I am being admitted 48hrs before section as I need steroids and insulin drips so am taking a before and after bag with me as I can manage with pj's til the section then DH can take that bag and bring my delivery and baby bag in for the big day!! I managed to fit all my delivery stuff into a small suitcase on wheels which is easier for when we come home so DH can carry baby in car seat and we can put baby bag on top of small suitcase and wheel it out without trying to carry heavy stuff

I have had steriods over 48 hours periods at the 25 weeks, but I did read in my notes something about steriods so now you have me thinking I may need more xx

Mmm note sure if you need more as I had them at 33 weeks with DS in 2006 as I kept suffering with pre-eclampsia and then admitted again at 38 weeks whereby they checked my notes and said that I was already covered so you might be okay.

oh that sounds good they did say that when I was having them that would be the baby covered so fx I dont need more I got them in my bum cheek and they were ouchy lol xx

Good list MDSRemos, You make me and my OH have a right chuckle at the nightie bit, (hard to bend down to pull up PJ bottoms!) ha Good thinking. Def nighties as you will have a catherter tube and bag hanging from between your legs so PJ's are not going to work unless you have man flys! ha

Your so right about the towels! I will take a large one for my shower, but will also have an old manky red hand towel and I have an old choc brown flannel in my bag, for my bed wash after and OH can take those home for washing.

I always take throat sweets in my bag, as nothing worse than getting a dry tickly mouth after a section, or cold, and if you cough you have to hold your stomach quickly and brace yourself, not good!

Ask your hosp, my notes for the pre op bit this time says take two bags, one small with your stuff and baby outfit etc and then all the rest in the other bag to stay in car for OH to get when you have moved to ward after, all hosps may be different tho

Remember , they usually get you to walk down to theatre in your dressing gown and slippers , so you don' get cold, or flash your bum in the op gown!, so don't pack in the wrong bag!
