Well - I've finally got around to posting my lovely birth!
Woke up on Tuesday morning (31st) and did my usual routine... getting DS up, we both had breakfast... all going well... then I was just putting on a nappy wash. I went to stand up and then... uh-oh... felt liquid trickling down. It was 8.30am
DH was at work so I rang him to warn him. Stupidly I still didn't want to say 'my waters have definitely broken' even though at this point I was standing in a puddle of water
Rang hospital and explained what had happened - they said to make my way over when I'd sorted things out at home. All the time I'm waddling around using DSs cloth nappies to soak up my waters which kept coming and coming.
DH came back from work and DHs parents came over. We got to the hospital at about 10.30 and went to emergency as told. They put me in a little room and stapped me up to monitor the baby. Everything was good but I hadn't had a single contraction. With DS1 my contractions started 1 hour after my waters went.
The doc came in and spoke to me - I didn't really like him. I was GBS positive which I knew meant the antibiotics. I asked if I HAD to have a canula as it is really inconvenient during labour to have a needle in your hand!!! The doc said tough basically. hmmm
He then said - we might have to induce you - they didn't want to leave bub in too long incase the GBS virus went up to the baby. NOOOoooo I thought! That I didn't want! But I thought - ah well... might isn't definitely. We went for a walk to get some lunch at the cafeteria. No contractions.
They moved me to a birth suite room and then the midwife came in and said - right we'll start the induction shortly. So it turns out there was no might about my induction! grrrr doctors!!!
My midwife was wonderful!!! She asked what I wanted. I said I didn't want to be tied to the bed like last time. So she found me the portable monitors for the heartbeat. The induction drugs were in a drip on wheels so I could move around.
It was the most surreal thing. There I was in a labour room but not in labour!
They started the drugs at 4pm and explained they'd up it every half an hour until I reached the right number of contractions... Nothing happened for an hour. Then finally at 5pm I had a mild contractions. I guess they built pretty quickly... I knelt on the floor beside the bed and focused on breathing through my contractions. I kicked the floor during the painful bit to distract myself. I felt very much in control.
Then I felt that ooooh neeed to pooooo and we were off.... next thing I knew I could feel that stinging stinging sensation of crowning. I kept thinking its too early isn't it?? The midwife was putting cloth beneath me (I was still kneeling by the side of the bed).
I think DH told me I was doing really well at one point and I told him to shut up.
I don't want to be talked to at all during labour. I also distinctly remember swearing a couple of times and then apologising - so I'm glad my manners don't desert me. I also said sh*tty titties at one point. Strange things we say during labour!
Then 55 minutes after my first contraction - there was my little baby boy lying on the floor
It was great - I could turn around and see him immediately - I saw DH cut the cord. It was wonderful!!!
Percy Wolfgang Edwards was born at 5.55pm, 3.6 kilos/ 8 pounds (he was 38 weeks)
The midwife told me I was born to do this!
No drugs! Very pleased with myself... although to be fair I didn't have time for drugs.
I had a 2nd degree tear - baby had his hand up by his face so that didn't help.
Didn't feel too tired afterwards either. It was such a wonderful birth. So there isn hope for inductions. Everyone else had told me they were awful... but here is a good induction story for you all...
So here I am lying here with my beautiful bundle of joy on my chest. I'm so in love...
