Paternity Testing

Hi everyone,

I've been looking into prenatal paternity testing and have come across two companies that can do this in the UK (since late last year) by taking a sample of my blood and the potential father's blood. It says that the baby's DNA can be found in the mother's bloodsteam via the placental wall.

I was wondering if any of you have heard of this or by any chance know of anyone who has had this done? I know you can get tested by either amniocentesis or CVS but I'm not willing to do that because of the low risk of m/c.

I wouldnt recommend any type of DNA testing prior to birth of baby. The risk is still a risk and I am surprised that UK clinics still allow it. In my opinionyou shoul just wait until bab is born - DNA testing is a simple mouth swab test from the baby, mum and potential dad. Anglia DNA is the cheapest company at the moment! xxxx good luck with what ever you decide x

The blood way is 100% risk free - they take your blood the usual way in the arm xx

Its definitely by a normal blood sample. Baby's DNA gets into the mother's bloodstream via the placental wall x

Mrz85 - Due to personal circumstances it has been decided by the people concerned that if a test is available which is 100% risk free to the baby then it is best to have it before baby is born x

The placenta actually acts as a screen to prevent dna passing through. Any dna passed from the baby to the mother's blood stream is incidental, and in no way sufficient.

I wouldn't recommend going to any of these cads, they clearly don't know what they're talking about when it comes to dna.

There is no 100% risk free way of getting a DNA test before the baby is born - this is why people wait until after the baby is born to do these tests.

i agree jayjay and never heard of doing it before baby is born either

i have never heard of a dna before baba is born i watch enough jezza to know this thats y they always wait till after the bby is born to prove paternity xx

I've just read a piece on the web about a uk company who said they offer this service on reading through though it states no refund if their test fails and that the results are not able to be used in a uk court situations. I personally wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Save your money and do it after baby is here. Take care xx

Yeah sounds dodgy, and respectable places would never do it as there would be a risk the client would terminate depending on the results. Not saying you would but that's how it could be seen

I am surpised this point wasn't raised earlier as this was the first thought that sprang to mind.

It is not only potentially dangerous to undertake the tests but incredibly unethical - who knows what the results of any tests would mean for the safety and wellbeing of the woman / baby and any other parties involved

Firstly - I'm sorry you're in a situation where you're having to think about this - bet you just don't need the stress and everyone having an opinion and interfering.

After looking at everyone's advice and the little I know about DNA testing I also would say wait until the baby is born, which unfortunately sounds like it'll be a headache - but better that than wasting money on a test that isn't reliable.

Prenatal paternity testing is absolutely accurate. Non-invasive testing is absolutely save. Today you can have non-invasive prenatal paternity testing. And only this kind! The only risk is getting worried about testing, but process is very simple (you can read about it here https://dnasu.com/services/paternity-test/), so you shouldn't worry. A friend of mine had non-invasive prenatal testing and then, after baby is born, usual paternity testing, just to be sure. Results came the same.

Hi All,

I don't know anything about paternity testing. But I do know that you can have a blood test done (normal needle in the arm) in order for them to obtain a sample of baby's blood. We had this done in a procedure similar to harmony test to test for genetic disorders. They separate baby's blood from yours and can do genetic testing. I would therefore think that it is possible to find out paternity of the baby via this method as they can find out everything else from specific chromosomes to sex of the baby X

You can also tell baby's gender from taking bloods from mum's arm so it would figure that you should be able to get the paternity.
