Hi, i have posted before in the name forum as we are struggling to decide on names. we have both decided we like Olivia for a girl, but it has been at or near the top of girls names for the past few years. I only personally know one person who has a daughter called Olivia. Do you think it is a bad idea going for a very popular name x

I think it often depends on the area. I think Olivia is a classic and so beautiful. If you like it why not x

I've just found out my girls names is in the top 10, really disappointed! Although I don't know any child with that name and I'm a teacher. I know what you mean, it puts you off but I think you should still go for it!!

We are having this EXACT problem. Olivia is the only name that feels right to both of us, but we don't like that it's so popular- identical problem!! It's so hard because nothing else feels right :-(

tbh my brother has a very popular name (in fact my husband and my brother share the same name lol) but its nopt really that big a deal i dont think. we thoiught luke was a very popular name but so far havent come across any lukes his age!

i only know 2 olivias... one is 2 1/2 and the other is 24

I only know 1 Olivia and shes 21yrs old.

My mum mentioned this name to me the other day and that she woul like it to be added to my girls list for if and when i have my next baby lol! Its beautiful.

I had the same issue with Noah, before i fell pregnant and even up until my 20wk scan i didnt know ANYONE named Noah.
Noah is now 13ms old and I know 3 others im my area  grr lol x

I know one Olivia.

Have a look at this link and it tells you the number of kids called X name in 2013 (it's the top 100 boys and girls)

http://www.theguardian.com/news/dat...-top-100-baby-names-in-england-and-wales-2013

Almost 4,600 named Olivia.

We like Isabelle but when you combine the different spellings (Isabel / Isobel) and the variations (Isabella) it's the most popular girls name last year and that actually does put me off.

Oddly we knew James was popular BUT it didn't put us off. I don't actually know any other James' in real life?

X

It's a lovely name, but I know what you mean about it being popular. I know of three Olivia's and they're all under 1. Two of them even have the same middle name. We picked out Elin for a girl which is around 500-600th in popularity and Oskar for a boy which (spelt with a c) is about 8/9th now I think and I know of two Oscars born recently. Luckily we had a girl!

I think if you really love the name, then go for it!!

I love this name! it's wonderful!! All of the names become popular, sooner or later;-) In 5-10 years the most unique and special name you have found for your baby may become the most popular. So don't look at all of those lists! Choose the name you really like.

I love that name and Grace and Emily. But i know 3 Emily-Grace's and several Olivia's in my baby groups.

With our 1st we were team yellow and for a boy the only name we loved was Jack as hubbys Grandad was Jack. But i said no as it was #1 on the baby name list and 2 friends had kids called Jack.

Personally i wouldnt pick anything in the top 20. (Freya wasnt when we named her! Its become more popular since). X

Its personal opinion, for me it would be too popular. I don't really want any names in the top 50 as I want my child to be the only one with their name in the class. I wouldn't think in the way do you know anyone else, as it isn't about that as all the people with that name are probably still babies!

I love Olivia too (and Oliver for a boy) but I'm unsure due to popularity. My hubby and I are thinking of Olive as an alternative....I love it, but I'm worried it might be too old fashioned. What do you think?

Before I found out I was having a boy, Olivia was our number one choice for a girls name. I thought it was fairly unusual until our paper ran a story on the 'most common boy's and girl's names' and Olivia canme in at number 2! I literally know no-one who has called their little girl that! Personally, I would go with it, it's a beautiful name.

If you love it I wouldn't let popularity bother you. My lo has an unusual name (not in any of the top 100 lists ever) yet I have heard of 4 other babies with the same name as her and she's only 19 months! So even picking an unusual name doesn't guarantee yours will be the only one in class lol x

Olive was my girls name but I'm having a boy, I love it, gorgeous name!
