Not sure if I am having a miscarriage...

Today I am approx 5 weeks and 1 day. Yesterday I had nausea, some light abdominal cramping and last night before I went to bed I saw a very small amount of brown discharge. I assumed this was normal and went to bed. This morning I woke up and went to the toilet. When I wiped there was a medium amount of red blood on the tissue. Enough for a few wipes before it stopped. I’ve got a small pad on and I’m still bleeding slightly now too. I’ve phoned the NHS 111, spoken to an out of hours nurse then a nurse at the early pregnancy unit. They’ve advised me to monitor the bleeding and call back after 9am. It’s now 6.45 and I’ve got an agnosing wait... I don’t know if I’m miscarrying. This is my first pregnancy... I’m so upset I don’t know what to do any advice would be appreciated

When you call back, I’d ask if you can go in and have your bloods checked. It won’t give you an immediate answer (you need to have two tests 48 hours apart to check your levels are doubling) but it will give you the answer.

Thank you. I will do... that wait will be awful but at least I will know then. Is there anything they can do to tell me immediately?

sjf, I'm really sorry to hear your goon through this is the bleeding still on going? I know a few woman have occasionally bleeding right throughout their pregnancy, so while it's not normal it's not alway sinister either.

If the hospital/epu unit decide to call you in they'll probably offer you a scan. At 5 weeks you won't be able to see much. Probably just the gestational sack and a yolk sac, so they may offer you a second scan in 10 - 12 weeks time. Or they might just do blood work.

How is the bleeding now? Got everying crossed that this is just one of those random bleeds xxx

I have got a liner on now and I’m still bleeding but I don’t think s much. It might have been more when I went to the toilet because I’d been lied down overnight and it was from a few hours worth... I’m going to call the EPU unit and ask to go in I think for my own piece of mind at least so I know I have a day when I can be told yes or no from blood tests. Thanks

They might ask you to wait until tomorrow last time this happened to be I was told they didn't have a sonographer in the epu so I'd have to go in on Monday. Hopefully your hospital isn't as stretched as ours xx

In my experience they will probably do blood tests 48 hours apart and a scan around 7 weeks.
I bled so much at the beginning of my last pregnancy that I didn’t even do a test as I thought I got my period. Then I had more bleeding the following week and the doc told me to test.
Bleeding is more common than you’d expect, have you passed any clots?

No I don’t think I have passed any clots. The blood was quite thin and stretchy looking if that makes any sense. It wasn’t thick.

So when you had your last pregnancy did you bleed quite a lot and that’s why you thought you weren’t pregnant?

I’m beyond hoping that it’s normal. I just can’t stop sobbing... I’m lied in bed aimlessly searching through forums and googling. I’m reassured slightly that people have said when they’ve had miscarriages they’ve had a lot of period type pains and cramps. I don’t have any pain whatsoever at the moment. I woke in the middle of the night with slight cramps but not anything as severe as a period paid. I just thought it was slight pain from feeling bloated...

A waiting game now it seems. Going to ask EPU for a blood test though I think and then I will have to wait and see.

I bled heavily from 5 to 10 weeks. I had a scan at 5 weeks where it was too early to tell anything.
I had another scan at 8 weeks and there was my baby having a ball.
Still bleeding at 10 weeks, by 12 weeks I was convinced sonething was wrong but everything was fine and the bleeding had stopped. My baby is 3 months old now x

Yes sjf I got my ‘period’ a few days early, I thought it was too heavy for implantation and it lasted a few days, but it was lighter than normal. Then about a week after that bout finished I bled again for a few days so I phoned the docs.

I’ve just phone the EPU again and they said that so long as my bleeding is light and I’m not passing any clots then I need to just wait... they said they can see me and examine me but I have to wait until tomorrow to speak to another EPU that has the facility to do a scan and blood tests. Just a watch and waiting game until then... I will keep you updated

There was never really any explanation just a long implantation.

Sjf by any chance did you have sex before the bleeding?

Sometimes that can cause a bit of a blood to appear. I had it the next morning after DTD but it was pinky and stretchy.
