It is with GREAT trepidation that I enter this part of the forum. Largely due to being sick to death of hearing baby names and arguing constantly with my hubby about what to name our little one. We are team yellow so are arguing about both boys and girls names which definitely isn't helpful haha

The other reason I worried about coming in here is because I don't want to offend anyone with my views on baby names. I have very strong dislike for some names and would hate to upset anyone accidentally just by being honest!

So here's the thing. We want an unusual name that sounds lovely, can be shortened to something nice and is classy enough that we could happily send an application form off to Eton or law school without feeling people would roll their eyes haha
I want to avoid most names on the popular lists because (and this is where people may hate me for saying this) all the Lily's, Sophia's and Emelia's of today may just be next decades Chardonnay's, Chantelle's and Crystal's lol (even though I do LOVE all three of the aforementioned names! Annoyingly I like a lot of names that are popular at the moment, just can't bring myself to name my child any)
I don't want any names that are en vogue at the moment, think Florence, Evie, George and Edward. Classic and lovely though they are, my name is Sarah and I want to avoid naming my child something that is in fashion at the moment and will make them one of a few in their class.

On top of all that, my husband hates most names but here is what our list currently looks like.
It's the names neither of us hate haha

Any new suggestions that you think may fit would be lovely and appreciated.

I REALLY hope I've not offended anyone :-(

Girls names:
Lorelei (pronounced Lora-lie) - my hubby loves it. I don't hate it and can be shortened to Lola I guess... Or Lolly as a nickname. Not sure still but don't hate it!

Angelica - hubby LOVES this. I'm not sure! Hate every way of shortening it and worried it's possibly chavvy?! Don't know because it's rarely used but can't see it being terribly upper class or classic lol

Penelope - my FAVOURITE. Hubby hates it completely and I dislike every way of shortening it which would definitely happen with a long name so think I'll have to let this go!

Boys names:
Tristan - currently a name we both don't hate but I don't adore either!

Cohen - our current front runner. I'm Jewish so I think it's nice to have a Jewish first name that's a little unusual and not biblical (Elijah, Jacob etc) but still not sold on it as technically it's a surname and unsure how I feel about that! Is it even cute?! lol my hubby loves it though.

Jasper - my favourite boys name. Hubby hates it. Says it sounds 'flouncy' and is a dogs name. His mother certainly didn't help when we told her and she turned her nose up lol

My daughter is Angelique, which we shorten to angel, but when she's older could be ange, Angie, or Angelique.

My back up name for her was Evangeline, shortened to Eva, I love it, husband hates it lol

Both quite controversial names I suppose, no offence if you hate them lol!

Struggling with boys names myself.

I thought girls names would be easy for me but maybe because I like so many it's more difficult to settle? Plus with my hubby hating 99% of them, it's not helping!

I quite like shortening Angelica to Angel when they are little... Maybe MAYBE even Annie but I don't like Ange, Angie etc (bad association with a girl I know called Angie haha)
Liam loves the nickname 'jelly' too which is definitely cute for a little girl, less so at 21 haha

Oooh I like Penelope. I personally prefer names that can't really be shortened so I probs won't be much use I'm afraid! What about Matilda? Not sure how you could shorten it though... maybe Mattie? Or Tilda, maybe Tilly? Or perhaps Felicity? Rosalie? Cecelia? Francesca? I love Camilla and also love all the shortened versions too like Milla, Milly, Cam.

For boys I'm not sure I also like Jasper but do know someone with a dog called that! .... Joel? Hayden? Theodore/Theo? Nicholas? Tyler? Calvin? Nathaniel? Grayson?

It's soooo hard trying to find a names that you both love and that you won't get sick of hearing/saying ha! Hope you find something! I try to look at film credits etc for inspiration cos I find baby name lists so boring to read through.

Haha my hubby is gleeful that you know dogs called Jasper! He is all smug right now!

What names do you like that any be shortened? If it's nice enough I don't mind that. Rather a name that can't be shortened than one that only shortens to things I don't like!

I think girls names are harder because they are easier to be chavvy?? I don't know why but I really struggled with picking a girls name.

I am the exact same with baby names, I just think that those which are lovely and popular may not sound so lovely in the future.

Me and OH have both just agreed on Annabelle for a girl. It's not very popular on lists and can be shortened to a few names (anna, belle, bella, annie). I really like Eden aswell but OH has vetoed that!

For boys we couldn't agree before we found out. I loved Cohen and Jasper. I also liked Caleb.

My friend is very anti popular names and loves names likes Beatrice, Matilda, Martha. (although she would kill me for giving out these names lol)

Hope this helps lovely xxx

I love Annabelle but Liam's being a dick about it haha he says it can be shortened to 'Bella' which is like Twilight ?!?!?! THIS is where my problem lies lol HIM! I love Isabella but because of twilight wouldn't name a child that at the moment but Annabelle is not Twilightey at all... Except in Liam's head. Obviously! Grr!

I won't tell your friend you gave out her names haha not a massive fan of any of them anyway quite like Matilda but too much of a childhood association with the Roald Dahl character for my liking!

I suggested Tabatha to hubby the other day, he was a bit unsure but I think it's pretty and classy! Dunno if you'd spell it Tabitha tho? And she could be called Bitty or Tabby or Abby? xx

I believe it's Tabitha. I like it a lot but, surprise surprise, the hubby doesn't :-( I swear he is doing this just to wind me up lol purposely disliking every name I come up with!

It's so strange isn't it how different names can mean different things to people. I'm the same with Matilda, love the name but just think of a book. Luckily my OH has never even seen a twilight so he didn't get put off by the shortening to Bella, because I really like it. I like names you can shorten because you can give them a nickname that suits their personality, I do however think our baby will be known as lentil untill she disowns us! lol x

Mine's the same, we've got a few we agree on though and one that we're set on. Still looking for ideas though! xx

My girls are Ella-Rose and Josephine (Josie). Josie's middle name is Nancy after my hubby's nana. I don't know any other girls with those names and I love them :) I also really liked Alicia (shortened to Ali or Lissy?)

If I'd had boys, my names were Zachary, Samuel and Elijah - I know they're quite biblical and I'm not religious at all but I just really liked them x

We have a few friends called Ella actually but Ella Rose is a beautiful name.
Josie is definitely unusual at the moment (I've seen your birth announcement by the way she is BEAUTIFUL!)
I like Alicia but our niece is Alisa so don't want anything too similar! Thanks though :)

I also knew a boy called Jasper though.. ;-)

Well we have Jake on our short list (could have Jacob I suppose) and we would probably have chosen Max (I guess you could have Maximus or Maxwell) to be at the top of the list but it doesn't go with our surname. booooo. Also love Harry but we can't have that either haha. I like Henry too! There are sooooo many boys names I love but most of them are pretty traditional!

Girl wise, the only girl's name we could agree on was Lucia. I absolutely love Elara and I liked Nola, Alexis and Lexi too. When I think about it I guess you could probably shorten most names (or lengthen them!), I just don't look at names like that as I would try to only use the name given at birth. For example, my husband is called Thomas but nobody ever calls him that as it's always been shortened to Tom (and now he hates being called Thomas)... I always wonder why they didn't just name him Tom?? I get that some people want to give the child that sort of option for when they are a bit older but it's not really my thing. We also have Oliver on our short list but I'm wary of it as I wouldn't want people shortening it to Ollie. I am just a weirdo, ha.

Thank you! I think she's beautiful but am totally biased lol!

It's so hard to decide on a name. We had a total nightmare as hubby is a teacher so associated most names with kids he teaches. I work with criminals and had the same problem! Good luck finding something you can both agree on! X

No, I don't think that's weird!

If I KNEW people wouldn't shorten Angelica or Penelope then I'd def pick one of them but people always shorten names. THAT annoys me lol
The reason I want a name that can be shortened to something nice is because of the fact people can't help themselves lol grr hate that my hubby hates Penelope so much :-( just wish it could be shortened to something he likes so I can try twist his arm that way! I'd never shorten it though - I love longer names!

Oliver is a lovely name. My cousin just had a boy and named him Oliver so that's out the question too lol (for me and Liam... Don't let my cousins baby affect your baby naming decisions! Hahaha) :p

Okay one thing being a teacher and having bad associations but working with criminals must make it so much harder!! Haha
What names are very 'typical' criminal names? Haha like, what do you come across a lot? #MustAvoidAtAllCosts

Haha I've worked with a few Tony's (also dh's dad's name but he's not a criminal as far as I know lol!), Luke is another one I've come across quite a bit although I've worked with so many people over the years I've probably come across most names lol! X

Just to add I know people with both those names who are lovely too so no offence intended!!! X
