James has had the sides off of his cot for months now and he is fine, I want to move Bee into the cot soon but am unsure if I need a toddler bed or a proper single?
I would go straight for the full sized single, especially as he is used to being in a bed with no sides. They look so tiny in there at first but the extra space actually helped Harry sleep better! He still has a bed guard as he sleeps on the edge of his bed x
It depends how big he is too. My daughter (3) still has plenty of growing room in her toddler bed (we got a cot bed), but my son is looking massive in his cot bed already and he's only 18 months and the cot sides are still up!!! I think toddler beds are closer to the ground than single beds as well. But if he doesn't fall out of bed, then you wouldn't need to worry about that.
James does occasionally fall out of bed - but I was thinking if I get a proper single I can buy one of those portable bed support arms things? Can't think what they are called but you get them on Amazon? We currently just have pillows on floor.
I am trying to figure out best way to do it moneywise as eventually they'll need bunk beds?
I am wondering do I buy a cheap toddler bed for James and Bee can have cot-bed then when she is ready for a bed we go for bunk beds? But that means James could end up in a toddler bed for 18M +?
I wish there were some kind of single beds you could "build" into bunk beds? IE you buy one bed then when you need the next one you buy it and stack it onto the other bed? !!
It came with the bed. It's pine and screws on the side.
Cam will be in his toddler bed for ages, we are in no hurry to change it yet. Because it's as long as a normal bed he technically could fit in it forever!
Or, just get bunk beds now? Sleep James in the bottom bunk with a guard and then just move him up to the top bunk when Bee is ready for a bed. We couldn't do that with Cam though I don't think! I reckon he would climb up to the top and we'd probably find him in the attic it something!! His big bro has a mid sleeper and Cam always climbs up the ladder and gets in with him in the mornings!
I love toddler beds, they have sides at the top, and are lower than a normal single. My little girl stayed in hers until she was 5 and I got her a mid-sleeper - I'll keep the toddler bed for when my 14 month old is big enough

Can you not buy these anymore? When me and my brother were little, we had bunk beds which converted to 2 singles, but that would have been over 30 years ago!!
Hi, I have a little boy and a little girl around the same age as your two, and we had the same problem!
I bought bunk beds from Argos, they can be seperated into two single beds. We have built only one of the beds up for now and put the other away in the attic until a later date! We have a bed rail on the single bed (which is nice and low) and it is working out just fine! 😊
I've got an expanding bed from Ikea - cream wrought iron style - starts off tiny then grows to the length of a full size single. They also do lots of combinations of bunk beds to might be worth a look if you are after something adaptable for the future.
Noahs a little younger than james.
But my plan is that the cotbed hes currently in now ill eventually use for baby no2 (hopefully next yr lol) and when that time comes ill put Noah straight into a single bed with a gaurd.
I'd only have to sell the toddler to eventually buy a single anyway.
Hes a big lad so im not sure how many years id get out of a toddler one.
But id keep baby no2 in the cotbed until its outgrown n again buy a single xxx
And Nat i think there are wooden bunk beds that u can convert to bunk or singles.
My sister and I had some when we were kids.. Talking 15yrs ago mind x
I know you can buy bunk beds that separate but I didn't want to buy both beds now (storage and money!!). I guess that's an option although we literally have nowhere to put a whole bed??
The toddler beds I am looking at don't seem much bigger than the cot-bed anyway so I may have to consider a single.
It all depends on how the cot-bed fits alongside the bed actually as Bee is co-sleeping and I cannot find a co-sleeping cot-bed... only co-sleeping cribs!
Good thread Nat as I'm debating this at the moment too.
I need the cotbed for Erraid and Madison needs a new bed, I just don't know what to do for the best!x
With my eldest I went straight to a full size single which I was worried about. We kept him in the cot without the sides till he was 3 though. He was fine. With my next, I bought her a toddler bed. It was actually a waste of money as she grew out of it in a year. With my youngest, I'll be going straight to a single from the cot.
