Me and hubby dear decided right away that if we're having a girl, she'll have Karen as a middle name as it is my mam's name, and she is very ill and long story short, will be lucky to meet baby, let alone see any birthdays. My nana (mam's mam) has also said to me without us mentioning it that she thinks it would be really nice and mean a lot if we gave baby Karen as a middle name.

The only fly in the ointment, as it were, is that when I told my mam this, she really doesn't want the baby to have Karen as a middle name, she says it's a crap name, and she has suggested another that she really likes.

So assuming it is a girl, we want Lily Karen Candlish, but she wants Lily Rose Candlish. I don't know whether it's more appropriate to give the baby the name we want, honouring her, so baby will always have her name etc, or to give the baby the name she has suggested and loves, thus following her wishes.

Any ideas or thoughts?

I think they're both really nice names but I think giving her the name your mum wants then you cam tell her when she's older and it'll mean more to her x

yeah i agree itll be such a nice story to tell lo that u wanted to name her after her nana and her nana wudnt have it but wanted to choose lol ... its still naming her after her... and the name ur mums chose is lush ... really hope ur mum meets ur lo xx

the other way to do it is to give her both names, Karen and Rose?

She loves the name Lily, as I do, and it's after my Great Grandma who was a totally awesome lady and I said since she died years ago I'd name a daughter after her, so don't want to budge on that - and also don't want two middle names so it's definitely an either or.

i think to go with your mums wishes :) the name is beautiful and a great story to tell her that her nanna chose her middle name xx

I agree with the rest, I would go with your mums choice. Lily Rose is a gorgeous name! And it will mean alot to your little one to know that it was your mums wish for Rose to be her middle name :) xxx

It's kinda funny that you want to give your daughter your mum's name to honour her and your mum had a better idea :)

It's weird actually because my nan was the same. Her firstname was Karen but she hated it so much that she never used it and used her middle name.

I personally think that you should do what you mum says and use Rose as the middle name.

Your mum might just make it to see her grand daughter, i'm sure it's known to happen, and it might even upset her if you went against her and gave your daughter a name that she hated for herself.

You could always give her 2 middle names Lilly Karen-Rose Candlish or Lilly Rose-Karen Candlish I think either sound nice and would keep everyone happy. xXx

*sorry didn't read other posts, I would go with your mums wishes then.

Little update to tie this up - my mam sadly died at Xmas, but scan today showed I'm having a girl so baby girl will definitely be Lily Rose Candlish and I'll be able to tell her when she's older that her Nana picked her name.
