Ladies who are taking this, was it prescribed by your doctor or your fertility clinic?

Way back in November my doctor said I should try some, she then sent me to the fertility clinic and we finally saw the consultant last week. When I mentioned it to him he brushed it off and said oh no that is very out dated. However everything I've read about pcos says that this is one of the first things they should try. Confused by all the contradictions and I'm worried I'm missing out on something that might help me.

I have been prescribed it by my GP years ago when I wasn't TTC. I had just been reading ip on PCOS and decided to ask for it and they prescribed it. However, I didn't carry on with it as it's quite restrictive having to take it 3 times a day and makes you sick and / or have problems at the other end (!).

I was put back on it by the consultant at the fertility clinic though but only after a few failed rounds of clomid x

I have PCOS and my GP said I should be put on it when I was around 16. Sent to the gyno and she said "when you want children we will" back then I was like 17. Now I'm ready for children my new gyno says that metformin isn't the route for me.

It doesn't work for everybody & its a nightmare to be on quite frankly (my grandad was on it for other reasons). I would listen to your consultant as they are the ones who experience infertility on a daily basis & ultimately they will be the ones over seeing your care whilst TTC.

I would usually listen to a specialist but I really didn't get a good feeling from him at all. He wouldn't discuss anything with us, said I hadn't had certain blood tests done (which I had) and only commented on one of my husbands samples and never mentioned the other. We were in there less than ten mins, felt rushed and like we weren't wanted there and were wasting his time. Nothing was mentioned about helping with my pcos other than come back in 6 months and try clomid. Feeling crappy about it all and wondering what to do.

How long have you been trying? I have PCOS and was diagnosed at 16. I have never had treatment for it other than the pill which is ridiculous because that doesn't help the problem at all. I definitely how you feel about that.

I know you've had to have been trying for a certain amount of time before clomid. Did they give you instructions for blood work etc? Did they tell you about Folic Acid? That was the only information I got, start that every day & when all the tests are done we will talk more.

There is definitely no sense of urgency!

We have been ttc for two years and were referred to the fertility clinic last November. Had some tests and scans and they said I had pcos and gave me a leaflet on it and that is all. My doctor suspected I had it before she referred me in November and it was then she told me about metformin. I'm 33 this year and my husband is 5 years older and they keep saying we are old but don't seem that interested to actually do much. I've had many scans, loads of blood taken, hsg and my husband has done two sperm tests. So far we have had the results of his second test (no idea why not the first as well) and one of my blood tests, they won't tell us anything else and I'm fed up. The only thing they have told us to do is to both take conception vitamins.

I can't believe they just fob people off with the pill, everything I've read about pcos suggests you need treatment and asap to stop it from getting worse.

I know its ridiculous but I think its because there isn't actually a specific thing they can do. I was on the pill and going to ultrasounds and the tech woman said that the pill changes how your ovaries look and even then she could still tell that I had pcps because my ovaries don't look normal.

My doctor told me about metformin but then my gyno said that isn't right for me. That led me to believe that she suspected something else was going on to but so far we found nothing. I do know that they don't give it to everyone though & it's not right for everyone either. Maybe when you go back they will offer clomid? The only thing I can suggest is go back to your GP and badger them to write to the gynos again and ring up and tell the appointments that you will take a cancellation if it happens.
