Hey :)

I'm sure some of you ladies have been on Metformin and i've read about so many people feeling sick that i'm worried i'm going to feel pukey until i stop taking them.

I'm supposed to wean myself onto them which also worries me because it implies that some people are really sensitive to the side effects but i don't want to take less than prescribed.

What dosage was you on?
What side effects did you have?
How did you overcome them?

Thanks xx

I only took it for 4 months but it does have side effects. Most common is diarrhea i think. I started with 50 and increased to 100. Symptoms went away after some time.
Why are you on it? To increase number of eggies?

Thanks Knopk :)

I had some blood tests done and apparently i have a homozygous gene that is supposed to make me at increased risk to PCOS and sugar issues and also have something to do with placenta blood clots and egg quality.

So they have put me on Metformin to hopefully improve egg quality and reduce clots if we get some embryos.

I'm on 3 X 500 mg a day.

Diarrhea isn't too unwelcome as i'm pretty constipated anyway :oooo:

It's feeling sick i'm worried about. I hate being nauseous :(

I was on 2 x 850mg for 2 years and started straight on that dose. For the first two weeks I felt sick all the time. I just took it as a practice run for mornin sickness! After that, I didn't have any side effects - but then again they did absolutely nothin for me. They r supposed to help u lose weight and regulate ur cycles if u have PCO (which I do) but it did neither of those things for me :(

I know a few women who have been on them and got pregnant whilst taking them so it's not all bad. They just disnt work for me :(

Ah,ok. It is indeed used for insulin resistance. Supposed to be good for resolving PCOS related issues and people lose weight on it. I dont remember nausea tbh but even if you get it, its good to prepare yourself for nausea to come when you are succesfull.

BTW I am lurking in your threads and was very glad to read they found the issues so they can correct them, should have done tests earlier, eh?

Wishing you good luck, dont worry about side effects too much, it does go after a week or two.
Fingers tightly crossed

Oh btw it made me hungry and I started gaining weight - but I wasnt overweight to start with so it had the opposite effect on me maybe? Eating little and often helps with nausea plus supposed to speed up your metabolism

Not going to lie Lou they will make you feel like crap, but it should pass but may take a few weeks.

I was started on one tablet for a week then increased it to two then three, but I found that the high dose was just a bit to much I was suffering with terrible headaches which I would literally go to sleep with and wake up with, so I went back down to two tablets a day and found that much more bearable, I have been on them for a month now and just starting to feel better.

They will most probably give you the shits  I didnt get them but for the first few weeks in the evenings I was getting the stomach cramps associated with them ... and the smelly farts

I did also lose my appetite and during my 2ww I did have a few days where I felt really nausious.

But the good news is that all the nast side effects should pass after a while it all depends on how quickly your body adjusts to it.

Thanks Larlybelle :)

I'm sorry they didn't seem to help you but i guess everything worked out in the end ;)

Losing weight might at least help counter the steroids!

Yeah, Knopk - i am glad that i had them done even if i'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. Taking pills isn't really my thing. I've got a stinking cold at the moment and haven't so much as touched a Halls - i always think that when i'm actually dying that nothing will work for me anymore :oooo:

I'll try grazing although i'm supposed to be on a diet and i don't do grazing very well. I don't have a slice, i eat the whole pizza

Thanks Vicky :good: (i think)

I'm feeling alright after the first one so i might even try for another today. I was supposed to start taking them a couple of weeks ago so don't really have time to wean myself on them.

Cramps isn't so bad either. I just don't want that "gotta puke but can't" feeling.

I only had the pukey feeling for a couple of days it past really quickly so fingers crossed you dont get it.

I just had breakfast and i feel a little bit heart burny and hubby said "Just because there are symptoms don't mean that you have to suffer from them" - there's sympathy for you

From the man who starts sniffing at the suggestion of a cold going around.

No personal experience, but I'm a nurse and most common side effect my patients report to me are;

Diarrhoea
Nausea
'Funny' taste in mouth
Muscle pain / Achy
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Flu-like symptoms
Flushing

They tend to be early on, but reduce as your body begins to tolerate them better. Don't let it put you off, some of my patients get absolutely no side effects (especially the ones who don't read the possible side effects lol!)x

Oh Mishi, your post was so helpful until you started sounding like my hubby at the end ;)

I've already had an explosive encounter with the toilet, but like i mentioned i quite enjoy a bit of bowel movement when it's pretty irregular normally.

Ok, that sounded a bit sick. I don't know what is wrong with me today - i'm a bit giddy.

Sorry hon! I didn't mean to sound unsympathetic because I am, but our heads have alot to answer for sometimes. Most likely you'll get a bit of the scoots (which you seem to quite like lol!) and feel a bit sick and lightheaded, but they will pass as your body adjusts to the dose.

And one of the possible side effects of your steroids (read your journal) is a bit of euphoria so that should hopefully even things out if the Metformin makes you feel a bit grim!

I really, really hope it all goes well :hugs:

I'm only playing with you Mishi :)

I totally agree with you actually about feeling symptoms because you expect them.

I took my maximum dose yesterday and i'm feeling alright.

I've even took this mornings tablet without food because i wasn't hungry yet and i'm going ok. I do feel a little bit bloated and crampy but i can't be certain that i wouldn't have felt that way anyway ;)

My husband took them when he was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and he just said his main symptom was the squits and I think his dose was 500 3 times a day but he's now on insulin so it's only a vague recollection as it was 8 years ago lol hope you feel better soon and things work for you :) xx

Thanks :) I don't even have the squits :eh:

Count your blessings Lou you maybe one of the lucky ones that gets away symptom free x

I think i might have a loss of appitite i think, went until 5pm today without eating and that was one of those "omg - have i not eaten today?!" moments rather than feeling hungry at any point.

I've eaten a salad now and i feel uncomfortable and blaoted, like i've eaten too much but it was a couple of hours ago.

I think i'll be able to cope alright at this rate :)
