Hi apologies if this has been asked in another thread.

I'm after advice as the best way (safest way) to make up formula bottles.

I currently boil kettle pour into jug let sit for 15 mins pour out into bottles and then cool store in fridge? I then add the powder to the bottle as and when needed and warm it.

Is this correct ???

I have got a TT prefect prep machine but can't use it until F is on 4oz ??

Thanks xx

You need to boil the kettle, wait approx 30 mins then add the powder as the water needs to be above 70 to kill bacteria in powder. Then that bottle needs to be used within 2 hours (i think that's the limit). Not sure about the perfect prep as I never used it xxx

The formula tins have the way you're supposed to make it given on the side, i.e. measure powder into bottle, boil kettle, put hot water into bottle, shake and feed within 2 hours. Discarding anything unused after the 2 hours. The idea is that the powder has boiling water on it to get rid of any bacteria (powdered formula is not sterile). This is the safest way to make up a bottle. To be honest, while you're using less than 4oz per bottle, the feed will cool down pretty quickly (we used to stick the bottle in a jug of cold water to cool it).

EDIT: perfect prep dispenses the shot of boiling water to mix with the powder before adding the rest as cold, filtered water. You could make up 4oz bottles from now but obviously you'd have some wastage.

Thanks ladies for your replys will make sure I make the feed up each time from now on.

Will give the TT prep ago aswell xx

How much is she/he on?

I'd just make 4oz and leave the remainder for ease

My perfect prep arrived yesterday and I thought the same about it starting from 4oz, but it's worth the wastage for the short amount of time baby will be on less than that.

I have to agree at that age, have the PP set up in times of emergency when lo is screaming for a bottle but if you can wait and be organised use the kettle technique x

I did the same, made four Oz and just poured out what was left after her feed. I used the ready made bottles a lot at the start too for quickness

I'd use the perfect prep if I were you just throw the milk you dint need. Alternatively she I'm away from home I use two flasks, one with hot water in it and one with boiled cooled. Much quicker than waiting for kettles to boil when baby is screaming!

Thanks ladies going to get it out the box this evening I don't know why I just didn't do it already... Doh xx

I will probably get slapped wrists but the way I worked it was I would make up a fresh bottle with boiling water, milk powder and cool it if I knew a feed was due. If it was middle of night and baby woke me up screaming for milk at unexpected times I normally used made up formula that you can buy in boots BUT I did occasionally boil water around midnight, cool it and put it in fridge and then just add milk powder to it in middle of night. My baby never had any tummy problems etc due to this and is now a healthy 14 month old. I know rules are there for a reason but on the odd occasion I think it is fine as long as it was not boiled too many hours before being used.

WHO say you can make them up to 24 hours in advance if they are prepared Stored correctly. We used to make bottles up in the morning for the day then on an evening for the night.

The who guidelines say "It is safest to prepare a fresh feed each time one is needed, and to consume
immediately." it then goes on to say if you "need" to prepare in advance, how to do it, but the guidelines clearly say that it is safest to prepare fresh each time.

Oscar wakes a lot in the night for food, I take a flask of boiling and a flask of boiled cooled water to bed with formula and bottles and make them up on bumph bedside table, saves me going up and down stairs when it's cold! I use the pp machine downstairs in the day.
