My birth story could be said to be a very long one or a very short one depending on how you look at things.
First off I had been having painful but irregular contractions since the Wednesday, 28th November. Going from 6 mins apart down to 3 and back up to 6.
This lasted all day and into Thursday so decided to call community midwife at 4pm to see if I was progressing at all. Got to the midwife and was told that my cervix was very posterior and only admitting 1 finger tip. Needless to say I was completely gutted and went home anticipating having to be induced on the Sunday, 2nd December at 11 days Over due. I really didn't want to be induced!
Pains continued into the Friday so much so that I couldn't sleep so had 2 hours and had to get up and have a bath. So again at 4pm I called community midwife as the contractions were coming every 4-5 mins by this stage and getting very painful. Went in to get examined and the mw was fully expecting nothing to have changed and was very reluctant to check me but I insisted she did. Checked me and my cervix was forward and a stretchy 3cm so she stretched me to 4cm and said I was to phone as soon as pain became unbearable.
Got home and made OH and I some food while he got a bath. Was contracting every 3 mins at this stage and nearly crying through some they were that bad. Phoned FAU about 7pm, after 4 calls they finally answered! and got told to come in to be checked.
Once we got to hospital pains were so bad I couldn't sit down so I was leaning forward on the reception at the FAU swaying side to side. Must have been left there for 30 mins crying my eyes out. Once I was checked was told I could go home or get admitted and have some pain relief. So we got admitted and I was taken over to the mid led unit and my room with a birthing pool yay!
So my midwife came in to see me, she was called Maria, and helped me through a few contractions which really really helped. Was lovely! Got told I had to progress a bit first before using pool as was still only 4cm. So I swayed leaning against bed with some G&A which I loved at start but then made me feel sick so I stopped using it.
Got checked again at 9:40pm and was still not progressing so told to get in shower and try the water on my back which is where all the pain was. Contractions were every 2 mins at this point and some were coming right after each other with no rest in between. Was in shower for 2 hours and checked again at 11:40pm and I was only 5cm so still couldn't use pool.
MW decided to break my waters and that's when all hell kicked off. MW went to help her other lady deliver but made me get on all fours using the birthing ball before she went to help baby come down more. I found it way too painful but was made to do it basically. Within a few minutes the contractions were all on top of eachother with absolutely no break and my body was pushing with each one. I physically couldn't stop. I was terrified I was pushing too soon as was only 5 cm 15 mins ago. OH all of a sudden went white and said I was bleeding really bad. I panicked and screamed to go get midwife as I couldn't stop pushing and I could feel her head coming down.
OH couldn't find anyone! At reception, in the hallway, nowhere! They hadn't even given us a call bell so he ran to labour ward round the corner and found a nurse thankfully! She came in and told me to stop pushing and breath through it, easy for her to say as I wasn't trying to push at all my body was forcing me. The relief from pushing against contractions is amazing! Even though I was on absolutely no pain relief!
The nurse wheeled in one of the trolleys to deliver babies and my midwife eventually showed up after me pushing for 10 mins while being told to stop. She takes over and has a lookand said she can't see baby's head would I like her to run the pool?! I couldn't move! The pressure down below and the feeling of babys head in my pelvis was ridiculous! She started running it anyway and said when she checked me if she ould see babys head I wouldn't be able to get in, at this point I didn't care!
She made me roll over onto my back with OH behind me on a chair which was the hardest thing I've ever had to do! And there was babys head! I was then told to push, finally! I didn't feel my contractions from this point on just the urge to push with each one and her slowly coming down.
MW kept checking babys heartbeat and at one point called someone else in to check me and all of a sudden I was forced onto my left as babys heartrate had dropped too low. I was then told they would have to cut me to get baby out as fast as possible unless I could get her out in next push. I was terrified as I had no pain relief at all and they weren't going to numb me at all. I tried my hardest to push her out but it was too hard and they cut me, which felt horrible as I could feel everything! With next push head was out and they seemed to calm down and let me wait for next contraction which took ages!
I finally got the urge to push and felt her twist as her shoulders came out and her little legs. She was put up on my belly and I was shown she was a girl, I was so happy I cried my eyes out. I was just happy she was ok! She was born at 15 minutes past 12 after only 23 mins of pushing. If I pushed her out in 8 mins I would have had a November baby!
The cord was left to pulsate then OH cut it and I was left to cuddle my pretty little girl as we waited for the placenta as I was delivering it naturally. I decided to try latch her on to help contractions and she went on straight away and fed for 10 mins. Got the urge to push about 15 mins later and pushed out the placenta in 3 small pushes. It was massive!
Was then able to get up have a shower and get settled in bed with some tea and toast while OH had some skin to skin. We were left alone for about an hour then the MW came back to do my stitches. I will not traumatize you with the details but it was worse than the birth for me. They stitched me for about 45 mins having to keep injecting the numbing stuff as it kept wearing off. I asked if I tore and they said no just making sure the episiotomy looks good for you... yeah right.
At about 6am I started getting restless and wanting to just get home to relax so we asked about getting discharged. We were told at the latest it would it 12pm so we were fine with that. Then at about 8am we were told it would be 2pm as we needed to see a paediatrician as Lyla has a little raised birth mark on her chest which I noticed. So we asked OHs BIL to pick us up at 2pm. When he got to hosp they told him it would be 6pm as we had to wait 6 hours after birth and she was born at 12:15... ummm yeah 12 hours earlier than the one she was thinking
In the end I was waiting until nearly 5 for a paediatrician to come out look at her and say its a birth mark
Anyway! If you got this far, thank you very much for reading. Sorry if bits don't make sense I'm writing one handed with my little girl in my arms
She;s perfect, only thing is she won't let me put her down and squeals like a piggy when I do!
Here's some piccies!
