Lifting the Veil #2

because they have chosen to as it is important to them. Just as some christians wear a crucifix and others don't. Does that mean we should ask all christians to remove their crucifixes, or ask all sikh's to remove their turban's?

And the views that if they want to practice their religion they should all go back to a muslim country doesn't really make for a more intergrated community does it?

not everyone wants integration beanie

some of the best things they come to love is because of integration

a crucifix or a turban doesn't cover the face.

i really think that's the important thing to remember here - covering of the face impedes on communication. this is why face to face conversations are much more effective than telephone ones. you have a certain breakdown in communication when there is a lack of facial expression.

as i said, they could easily wear a regular headscarf. other muslims do.

and being integrated is not the same as a multi-cultural society. they should integrate into OUR culture, not the other way round. they did come here after all.

Xena, honestly I am not being pedantic but I don't understand. The Britsh Isles has always been colonised, from the saxons, romans etc etc. Immigartion has always helped this country, and was in fact encouraged by the government due to labour shortages etc. When people came over here to fill these shortages they came over with their religion which they have practised in relative peace. They have integrated into our culture but they also have their culture, you can't expect them to just forget that.

And the veil is not worn all the time, so it will not impede commuication. I use my phone to text my friends and communicate great with them. I chat to Emilia o9nline and have never seen her face, yet I count her as a friend and we communicate great. Yes facial expressions are there to aid communication but its not the be all and end all.

ppl of other countries is what largely helped made this country and alot of 'western' countries

exploitation.. slavery... and just plain old immigration

but thats right..get em to work like ants...

then ship them back when the work is done

I don't expect them to forget their religion, but I don't think that a teacher wearing a full face veil in a school is any compromise on their part whatsoever.

That is just a muslim woman expecting little children - I presume mostly non muslim children at that - to just accept that she has this big black scary thing on her face.

That's not the way for a teacher to behave. A teacher put the best interests of the child before herself. That is what I would expect from a teacher, and I expect most parents would expect that from a teacher too.

I don't feel it is in the best interests of the children to have a teacher that is both scary looking, and harder to understand.

perhaps if more children knew about the veil (which she could understand) then they wouldn't be scared. She could intorduce herself with no male present so she could be uncovered and then explain that she wears it sometime. Things are only scary when we don't understand them.

I still think it's inappropriate for a school, when communication is crucial.

If she was just having a random chat with someone, then okay, communication maybe isn't THAT vital, so you can get away with slight communication lapses. but in a school, well it's very important that communication is crystal clear.

lol that's not what i mean - the kids aren't deaf. i'm sure they can hear her fine.

it's just that sometimes things that are said can be meant one way, but taken another way, and often looking at somebody's face and seeing their expression is the only way to see how they actually meant it.

that made sense right? lol

do you not think its a bit insulting to males? that she basicly believes they will purve on her? are they super sexy under there

i just think that if she was happily talking to me then when kris walked into the rrom she covered her face, he would feel a prat and its insulting to both kris and I

Not at all, I don't think she thinks they are pervs, just that only her husband should be the one to see her face.
