Hello Ladies,
Well, my little man is 7 days old today and I have finally had enough free time to sit down and write my birth story...I hope you are sitting comfortably
My EDD was 29/04/13 and on this date precisely, at 00.27am, I began to feel some period pain, which slowly turned to intermittent cramping. Ahhhh, mild contractions!! Eeeeeeek! I stayed in bed until around 03.00am when they started to get a little stronger and were about 10 mins apart.
I soon lost quite a bit of plug and had a few trickles of waters...no gushing like I was expecting though (like in the movies lol!)
DH made a quick call to the labour ward and I was told to sit tight at home for an hour, to monitor contractions and keep an eye on my waters - so for the next 60 mins, I rocked backwards and forwards and tried to make my hypnobirthing techniques work.
After another call to the hospital, we were finally on the way at around 06.00am. By 07.17am, I was at 3cm, on the G&A and everything seemed to be going well.
Not a lot changed throughout the day there was concern that my contractions were very inconsistent but I was told to keep going with the G&A and they would continue to monitor me.
By around 14.00pm, I was 6 cm dilated and was told I would be checked again in an hours time. At 15.00pm, I was checked again no change in dilation, but my contractions were far too irregular and we were told that I wouldnt be able to push baby out successfully if they kept on as they were (varying between 30 seconds 3 mins apart but the pain was almost constant). I was put on a hormone drip to try and stabilise the contractions and at this point was told that pethadene would help with the immense pain. I gave in and had a shot and this, coupled with the hormone drip is where it all started to go downhill. I felt like a zombie but the pethadene did nothing for the pain at all.
Although the hormone drip started to stabilise my contractions, it had an undesired affect on Joshua and his heartbeat dipped quite rapidly. I was also checked and had dilated a further 3 cms, but far too quickly the next thing I remember is an alarm going off and a flurry of midwives and nurses in the room, removing my drips, the tracer and clothing and putting me on a trolley DH tells me that he was informed I was being taken to theatre for an emergency delivery they were going to try and use a ventouse to get Joshua out as quickly as possible.
I remember being wheeled in to theatre and seeing a lot of people staring at me DH tells me there were 16 staff in the room. I still felt like a complete zombie because of the pethadene - but as it hadn't helped with the pain, I was desperate for some G&A - unfortunately this hadn't been set up in theatre, so I had to just try and breathe through my contractions - ouch!!
After signing some consent forms, I was given an epidural, which consisted of 9 injections in my back...but unfortunately it only worked down one side...
8 attempts were made with a ventouse, but little Joshua just didn't want to come out...his heartbeat continued to dip, so we were told that an emergency c section under a general was required immediately. DH was told that he would not be allowed to stay in the room for this procedure and I remember looking around the room still in my zombified state - trying to pick out my DH face amongst a crowd of staff, feeling quite scared I managed to find his face and saw him looking back at me with tears in his eyes he pushed his way through to me, gave me the biggest cuddle and kiss and told me he loved me before being taken to a side room.
The next thing I was aware of, is coming round in recovery opening my eyes very slowly and seeing my gorgeous husbands face smiling at me. Joshua was safe and sound, screaming his head off at the end of the bed but it was the most wonderful sound to me, as I knew he was ok!! He came into the world on Monday 29th April 2013 at 15.47pm, weighing 7lbs 13oz and despite some ventouse injuries to his head, was completely perfect and gorgeous.
The next day I was told that Joshua wasnt breathing when he was pulled out (feet first he had somehow managed to tumble and turn breech) he was blue and completely unresponsive but thank goodness, it didnt take them too long to get him breathing. He was however extremely traumatised from the whole experience which was apparently why he was screaming they couldnt do the usual checks on him, until a few hours after delivery. It amazes me that he is such a calm and relaxed baby, when I think about what he went through!!
We had to stay in hospital for a couple of days to be monitored as they were worried about little one developing jaundice luckily he didnt, so we were given the all clear to go home on the Wednesday afternoon. I was discharged with 2 sets of painkillers, iron tablets and fragmin injections to self administer.
It has certainly been one hell of a week and so much has happened! It wasnt the best entrance to the world for my baby boy and I cant say I would do it again anytime soon (!), but I have my happy, healthy baby at home and couldnt be happier J
