oh jj how do you do it? potty training i mean? tell me your secret I want to start joseph but every time i try ie when he's having a poo i put him on but he stands up i dont want to push it but really want to do it soon, we are moving into a bungalow soon so was thinking of trying then as will be easier as there are 2 loo's and can have potty in one of them. Have you got any tips? xx
To be quite honest Bidsy, it was much easier when I did the others the day after their 2nd birthdays, did them all the same. Some people recomend doing it in the summer, so they are butt naked outside and less mess, but mine would all have been 2.5 then, as winter babies, so didn't see the point. They all took 2 weeks, except this time (1mth), and he did get an issue with the potty, which delayed it a good week, it was not as comfy as he liked, so I took him to the 99p shop in town as they had some tiny ones, he chose a blue one himself and carried it home, and we turned the corner.. We have wood floors which helps, and then I put a bath rug under potty in lounge , warmer on the feet. Set yourself 2 weeks ish free of trip out and do nothing but camp out at home to potty train. I find switching to pants helps rather than pullups or being naked, as they actually get wet then if they have an accident, but we did use pullups a few times, just when it was not possible to do training, like when we went to our allotment, and it was freezing..
Get ready for it, buy a travel potty, we had a fully plastic one with the others, but don't think they make it now, so we got a pottette, which I was against at first due to buying bags , so we used leekproof swingbin liners to start with as pees were often with kitchen roll in the bottom with a piccy drawn on it! But now we don't use many and it's so nice to tie bag up and throw it away in town, compared to having to bring pee/poo home with you and cleanup/washout like my old one!
Also I brought two little carseat type wet mats , which we have used in highchair, pushchair and carseat, (can't imagine washing and drying the pushchair cosytoes!).
Also we brought a rectangle wet sheet, but it's quited , like half a cotbed size, and if Joesph was to sleep on sofa or lay down anywhere, your worried about accidents, use that.. Devon slept on my mums sofa today and he laid on it, peace of mind for me.
Then we brought 2 x cotbed waterproof sheets for his bed. He still wears a pullup or nappy at night and will for a while just incase.
We did use sweets to start with... potty sweets, I don't mind saying this is frowned on by most,, but I learnt with my third child , that a little incentive goes a long way to catching those first wees on the potty, to click it in their head.. We stopped them on day 5/6 I think and changed to more clapping, whooping ethad no idea the sweets had stopped so it's not an longterm issue! (my daughter was the same).
Oh and when he got funny about the potty, we use a wooden fruit bowl as teddys potty and we clapped and whooped for teddy, (he even got potty sweets too), devon got jealous and copied! ha sneeky. Devon used to get involved then with potty and sit teddy himself..
Devon also likes to go upstairs with me afterwards to empty potty into loo and then I clean it with loo roll and detol spray.. and then Devon gets to flush the big loo and wash hands, which he loves..
buy lots of kitchen roll, about 24 pairs of pants in 2-3 (most tighten up on washing, they see lots of action!) and detol spray for loo and for lounge floor! Your floors will be the cleanest ever...
good luck
Ah JJ thanks so much for that lots of good advice there. I'll get a travel potty sorted, one disadvantage is we have carpets so that will be fun. lol
Like the idea of teddy doing it too thats a great idea, i dont see the harm in treats at all like you said its more of an incentive. thanks again x
