January 2017 mummies! **2nd Trimester.**

Finally decided to sort out my maternity leave etc today. Turns out I'm in fact not entitled to a penny! -.- which has now caused me a lot of bloody stress :( xxxx

Oh no how comes ? Do you not qualify for statutory government pay ? X

Nope :( I don't earn enough through self employment and they won't consider me with my main job as I'm classed as 'agency worker'. So OH can only take his two weeks paternity and not the full period we were hoping he could of taken. Made me a bit sad as I know now I'm going to have to go back to work a lot sooner after baby is here xxxx

Oh how frustrating! Is your agency for different places ? I'm a part time agency/bank nurse but I'm employed by that hospital so apparently I qualify

What about maternity allowance ? I've just copied this from the GOv website ...

3. Eligibility
Maternity allowance for 39 weeks
You might get Maternity Allowance for 39 weeks if one of the following applies:

you’re employed, but you can’t get Statutory Maternity Pay
you’re self-employed and pay Class 2 National Insurance (including Voluntary National Insurance) for at least 13 of the 66 weeks before your baby’s due - the amount of Maternity Allowance you get depends on how much Class 2 National Insurance you’ve paid
you’ve recently stopped working
In the 66 weeks before your baby’s due, you must also have been:

employed or self-employed for at least 26 weeks
earning (or classed as earning) £30 a week or more in at least 13 weeks - the weeks don’t have to be together
You may still qualify if you’ve recently stopped working. It doesn’t matter if you had different jobs or periods of unemployment.

That's what I've just tried to apply for and have been turned down :/ very confused now! I don't see why they won't give me either xxxx

Oh hun how stressful :( Is it worth a trip to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau so they can explain it all/try and find a way around? That's the last thing you need to be thinking about.. I'm planning on applying for Maternity Allowance but goodness knows how much i'll get/if i'll be entitled to anything at all..

Poppy had a brilliant first day, and no tears from either of us :) Thanks girls xxx

Glad Poppy enjoyed her first day! Lovely name!

Did anyone see Dragon's Den yesterday? I didn't realize some nail varnish can be toxic so not suitable during pregnancy! I always wear it on my toes in the summer, bit worrying!

Yeah! I was really shocked and tbh it's put me off wearing any as I wouldn't know how to find out which were ok etc! Crazy
Also, with that guy, when Deborah was so keen in the beginning I thought he would get the money... All went down hill when she proved that it was actually toxic and not what they had been originally told...

xxxxx

Oh no! That's horrible. I hope you're able to get it worked out so that you can get some kind of maternity leave.

I know! They are fearsome but some of the entrepreneurs do try it on! Maybe I'll check with the midwife. You're not allowed nail polish on your hands for IVF egg collection but its ok on toes apparently! Maybe its because its further from your tummy and the cannula in your hand? :eh:

Hope you sort out your maternity pay, you don't need the hassle.

I have a question for everyone! We had a holiday in England in July but it was wet and cold and not very relaxing and we were considering a last treat holiday in the autumn before the babies come along. I know its not advisable to fly in the 3rd trimester, earlier with twins so we considered a short European cruise where we can just swim and relax. Found one yesterday going to Spain and Portugal which fits around all our appointments, the weather should still be warm there then but DH was worried in case we have any issues. If the twins came early we’d have to be air-lifted off the boat!! I’ll ring the midwife to see what she thinks but wondered what you lot thought? I’d be 26 weeks. :oooo:

I think the rule with not having nail varnish on your hands nails is so they can monitor your oxygen levels. Same will be if you have a c section, surgery etc. Some nail varnishes are also nuggets at interfering with sats monitors.

In regards to holiday, I would totally do the cruise! (Didn't realise you weren't from England!) just notify them upon booking you are pregnant, how far along you'll be etc and tell them again when boarding xxxx

Ah that makes sense! Thanks! Does it show in your nails then if your oxygen is low?
I am from England, I just meant that we stayed in the UK for our holiday in July! ;)

Yes abi is right, it's more so we can monitor SATS & nail varnish gets in the way, we use sensors which monitor the oxygen levels in your blood and it's through your fingers and even toes. It's tricky if you have cold hands as we have a nightmare picking it up.! We can sometimes get it by clipping it on to the top of your ear!

Sorry I've been quiet for a few days, have had a bit much going on.

Abi, I read on Maternity Action that if you're denied MA you might be able to get ESA. They have an advise line as well, so maybe give them a call? I hope it sorts itself out, sounds horribly stressful.

I had my 20 week scan yesterday, both babies healthy and very active, because apparently both placentas are anterior.

Had no idea about the nail varnish. But how do you find out if it's toxic or not?

Blueflower, go for the cruise. It's not then end of the world if they have to airlift you. After all, they are able to do that. :-)

Hi Rhiandell! Glad your scan went well, I can't remember if you wanted to know the sexes of yours?

I'm only guessing we'd be airlifted off the boat! I'd hope so! I'll have to check when we sort the holiday insurance. I've asked a couple of people at work and they said "go for it" too! Our other concerns were: is it extravagant & will it be warm enough to swim outside? It would be our last relaxing holiday so I'd like to scrape the money together & its mid 30s in Spain now so should be at least mid 20s at the end of the month! I'm convincing myself! ;)

That sounds wonderful Blueflower, go for it! I love cruises. :)

Eeeek!!! I've been laying on the sofa for the last hour feeling tons of movement and my first proper kicks! On one or two big ones I even saw my tummy jump! So exciting! And I have a tiny bump coming along too :-)

Definitely do the cruise, Blueflower!
