I don't know if this is much help as I only had the drip. I've said this before but my waters broke & got to 3cm then my contractions stopped so they gave me the drip (since it was my due date anyway). So I had the drip which brought the contractions on strong and fast but she was born quickly so can't complain. Labour was 8 hours since my waters broke in bed, until she was born. With the drip I was able to move about which was great and managed on just gas & air.

I was told by my midwife yesterday that when you go in they will do a vaginal examination (similar to a sweep) first, to see the position of baby and cervix etc. They then hook you up to the doppler machine to check baby's heart rate.

Firstly they will put some gel in you, which I was told is like a small cotton tampon that slowly releases an artificial hormone. They will repeat again after a couple of hours. My midwife said they will insert 3 of the gels before carrying out a rupture of the membranes (breaking your waters) which should get things moving.

Again though, everyone is different and you could very well go on a drip and not have the gel at all. Who knows!!!

I had ruptured membranes for two days previously so was induced with the drip only. They firstly broke my front waters then started the hormones via IV. Contractions started quickly and I had him 4 hours later. not much to it for me x

It doesn't sound scary. But if the labour is sped up isn't it more painful?

Those are key words lol "gets it over with" lol

Ok I had the full lot!

I had sweep on the Friday at about 2pm which was much more uncomfortable that the first time, went for a walk round supermarket, came home bounced on the ball felt really tired went to bed within 10 mins waters broke, went to the toilet was bleeding so rang hospital as it was red and they said to go in as it was not stopping.
Got to hospital and had a rupture so had to be induced. Only hind waters had gone pessary was inserted at about 12am and I got some contractions 3-4am but they stopped, 2nd pessary went in at 6am no contractions at all. 3pm went on drip....took a good few hours to work and by 6pm was getting contractions but I just wasnt dialating so it was not fun for me contractions were intense and as I was still way off took all the drugs going!
My main tip is take plenty of food as once you go on the drip you can only have water x

very similar to above - i was induced... they check you on the monitor for about 30 mins, then examine you. If nothing going on with your cervix alread they give you the pessary. Then they leave youto see what happens - if nothing happening after 6 hours they re-examine you and give another pessary if nothing happening.

WHen i was induced there was 6 ladies on my ward. Some of them had contractions and dilated quite quickly but others took a bit longer. I had contractions but didn't dilate so the next day they do the same process again - examine, pessary, wait 6 hours, examine.

By day number 3 i was 1 cm so they then took me down to delivery and broke my waters at 12 midday. I started getting stronger contractions after this but by about 7 pm i was still only 4 - 5 cm. SO they put me on syntocin drip and i requested an epidural mainly cos i was getting tired, but the contractions WERE bearable and i was managing well on gas and air. At 9:30 pm i was 5 - 6 and then all of a sudden by 1130pm i was fully dilated (that drip works wonders i tell you!) They let me rest til 1am and then i started pushing. Josie was born at 2:03am via normal vaginal delivery. I had 2nd degree tear but felt nothing as i had the epidural (great for when i was being stitched afterwards!).

So went in 9am thursday morning to be induced - had her 2:03am Sunday Morning. But actual labour was on paper 14 hours (from when they broke my waters).

Best experience i have ever had... and induction was nothing scary or horrible - just took much longer than i expected it to and was a bit fed up of all the internal examinations during the 2 days of induction. Other than that it was fine - very very controlled and safe - they know exactly what they're doing, and if your body doesn't want to get things going itself then i just find it amazing they can make you do the right things to deliver a baby in the normal way - just with a bit of help!

good luck if you are induced and don't worry i'm sure i was an exception for how long it took to work with me - all the other ladies induced at the same time were off to delivery ward the very same day. You will be fine and in very very safe hands- they know exactly what they're doing. Its so exciting that you only have a few days more until you will meet your gorgeous baby for the first time x x x x

I've settled with the idea that this boy has no intention of coming out on his own accord so induction day is what I have to look forward too.

Does the pessery hurt?

I'm Soooo getting an epidural if it's needed.

Thank you ladies :)

Thanks for the info. Like Lealea, I don't think my lil one is coming without encouragement!!

Question, when we go in, is that it, we stay in till baby's born, ie do we need to take the hospital bags?

Also, someone said (sorry, on my phone!) that once you're on the drip you can't eat, is that always true :(!

Oh, and!! Can you still have an active/water birth if you've been induced?

How come you're expecting to be induced Lealea? Have midwives said this is likely for you and if so what have the signs been? Also, will they induce you before your due date or make you wait? Xx

Im being induced on the 18th. It's 2 days before my DD but they won't allow me to go overdue.
But won't induce me before 39 weeks.

Thats a good question......do u stay in until the baby is born???

Yes you'll be in until baby arrives so def take your stuff. You cant have food with the drip, only water. I think that's incase you need an emergency section, you probably wont mind though at the time.

I don't think you can have a water birth with the drip but maybe with some of the other methods I'm not sure.

Ah right I see! So a couple more weeks to go ... bet u can't wait!! X

hiya i would deffo take your bag although my friend had a baby 7 weeks after me and had the pessarys 2 days in a row which did nothing at all for her - no contractions, no dilating etc so they did "try" to send her home. You can only have a certain amount of prostin pessarys within 48 hours and they told her they wanted to "rest her" for 24 hours so she could go home - but she said "no way!" and they let her stay and broke her waters!

i honestly can't remember if i was allowed to eat or not but i remember them making me have toast and jam and coffee before breaking my waters. I also remember my hubby popping off to asda once my epidural was working to buy sausage rolls and cakes but i only ate them after the baby had arrived!

unfortunately i don't think the water birth is an option as they do like to monitor you and the baby for any effects the drip might have on you.

hope that helps x x x

hiya - having the internal for the pessary to be put in was a bit uncomfortable but i think that was because my cervix was posterier and pointing towards my back and also they had to pretty much reach under and round the baby's head where it was so low! so it wasn't too bad just uncomfortable.

I just found that by the 2nd day (which hopefully you won't take that long) i was a bit sore down below just from the amount of internals where they keep checking before they give you another dose etc. Nothing too bad though and some midwives were much better than others at doing the internals.

Even having my waters broken didn't hurt which i was expecting it to but i just had some gas and air which is the best stuff ever!!!

hope it all goes well! can't wait to hear all about it! x x x

Bascally bcos my SPD has gotten to the stage it's at. She won't let me go overdue.
12 days to go. I can't wait to get things moving.
