Hi ladies!
Just wondered if anyone has any experience or advice about labour induction. I'm not really sure the process, and tried reading up a bit. But thought I would see if I could get some personal experiences...
I will be 41+2 on Friday, and have to go to my maternity hospital at 9.15, all I was told is it go to reception to get my notes, then go the the ward (which ward I don't know) where I will be examined and a pessary (prostalgel sp?) I think inserted, then I will be checked 6 hours later if labour hasn't started.
I had a sweep yesterday and midwife said my cervix was soft/ medium and accepts 1 finger tip.
I have no idea what to expect really, do I wait at the hospital? Will they send me home if I don't go into labour? Can my partner stay with me at all times? What do I do in the 6hours? Is it usually a ward or a room?
Sorry for so many questions. But any advice or experiences would be very much appreciated! Thanks :)

My experience was that they gave me a 12 hour pessary (cheaper than the 6 hour one) and then you wait!! YOu have to stay within the hospital but can wander around as long as you are back regularly so they can put a trace on baby to check they are ok. Mine took 48 hours but others only took a few so think it depends on how ready you are, I also had lots of other problems which we were unaware of at the time.
They will examine you at the end of the time and once you are making progress they will then move you to the delivery suite and the rest is labour!!
My advice is bring lots of magazines and books as it can get boring!!

some answer's for you hun.
when going for an induction you have to stay in hospital until baby is born. your partner can stay until usual 8-9 pm then they have to go home unless you go into labour then they are allowed to stay usually.
in the 6 hours, go for a walk around the hospital read something. the down side is your not allowed off the grounds. take plenty of drinks and snacks.
your on a ward until you go into labour then you go into your own room.
you have a pessary inserted 6-8 hours later if nothing has happened and they decide its right for you, then your given a second one again if nothing after that one then they have to make you wait 24-48 hours before trying again after that they will try break your water and if they can't there is a c-section hun.
i went into labour after the 2nd one.
if they can get a tip already then i'd say 1 maybe 2 pessarys needed x x x

Hi, with my induction I had two doses of some gel six hours apart. Was told to walk around but come back regularly for traces on the baby. We played cards, watched TV, chatted and read trash mags - wasn't really much else we could do. They decided not to give me a third dose of gel as it was getting late and I may as well get some sleep, my Husband was advised to go home at about 11pm to get some rest. I went to sleep and woke up at 3ish to find him sitting in the chair with his head on the bed, fast asleep. My ward was empty so they didn't mind him being there at all.

The next morning they broke my waters, transferred me to delivery and put a drip in. 13 hours later she was born :D

Good luck with your induction!! Xx

Pretty much what everyone said. I had 3x12 hour pessaries which didn't work so I requested a c section. Just to be aware that if the midwives are rough the internals hurt ALOT. I got told different things by different midwives nothing was consistent. Lots of waiting, lots of being strapped to a monitor. I was glad to be moved to a maternity ward from the labour ward, staff much better and doctors were fantastic. Good luck hun xx

Oh thanks ladies! Iv been told I have been booked on labour ward for 9.15am Saturday morning, I didn't really understand that. But now I do :) hopefully I will go with the stuff on Friday... I'm getting myself all worked up about it. Need to calm down, I'm so annoyed as iv been so positive and calm, and now I'm sitting here getting all worked up xxx

Hey hun , I had a great induction .

Went into hospital at 8 am . The baby was monitored and they examined me . They then inserted a 12 hour pessary , once the pessary was insert I was told to wait for half an hour and to go for a walk round the hospital . I started getting strong contractions about 5ish . At 6:30 I had some diamorphine and by 8 I was 9 cm dilated and taken straight to delivery . Ruby arrived 2 hrs and 40 mins later .

Xxxxx

Ooohhh!!! I'm loving the sound of that! Fingers crossed!!! Hopefully it's a Ruby thing :) as of our wee bundle is pink that the name we like!!!xxx

This is what happened to me this time. It's like a tiny tampon they insert. If nothing has happened after the first day they remove it and put another one in. If nothing after the second day they give you a day off and decide what to do from there.
Mine fell out on the second day!! So I had a sweep that night which dilated me just enough to break my waters on the third day, then I was put on a drip to get the contractions going.

With my first labour it was very different. I was 11 days over, I had one pessary of the fast-acting gel and labour started straight away! It was a really quick, easy labour too, possibly because being that overdue my body was ready to go!

What I would advise is to bring plenty to do (books, ipod etc) just in case, plenty of snacks for energy (once labour starts they only let you have water or lucozade sport) and keep active but rest in between.

Good luck, I hope it goes well for you and it doesn't go on too long! xx

Sorry, forgot to add - I was on a ward initially but once they broke my waters I was taken to a labour room. That might not be the same everywhere though x

Mine fell out twice the 2nd time they didn't bother to replace it as I was in labour anyway xxx

Any news today love? Hope I ain't missed it! Xxxxxxx

Hi, I had to be at the hopital for induction at 9am; I got there at 11. I had a pessery at 12pm, then I had another at about 5ish; by 9 I started getting contractions, I had 24 hour labour which ended in assisted delivery.. I hada difficult birth, but it is all worth it..!

I had to be at hospital for 4pm, 6 hour pessary was inserted at 5.30pm, by 6pm I was being wheeled off to a labour room with strong contractions, had my LO less than 12 hours later.

They did warn me that it can take several 'doses' to get going though.
