When I worked full time I earned just over 3300 before tax and DH earns around 4500 (I think) before tax. We used to have a full salary and a bit left at the end of each month and have (had) no clue what to do with it. Now I'm working part time and get just short of 2400 before tax. Taxes in the Netherlands are quite high, so when I see my paycheck each month I try to figure out what I work so hard for. Then I remember that without the high taxes we wouldn't have decent social benefits, decent health care and some other things. However, DH complains that our high taxes go towards funding the Dutch royal family (who spend money on silly trips), too much on charities (in which the money doesn't go to the people who need it but to those who run it) and funding trips for the Dutch PM and his cabinet (which there was much talk about in the news at one point).
Of course, now we haven't got kids, so the money we put aside is for us to use and save for a rainy day. Once we have kids, then the situation will change.
