I know the theory - syringe into back of cheek and gently blow on face so she swallows.... but she still spits it out.

Getting her to open her mouth to begin with is the real issue (as well as the fact she spits half the medicine out)

Help!!!

Ps she has a crackly chest and a cough that isn't clearing hence the antibiotics.

Jackson has never ever been good at medicine.. I just put it in and hope for the best, sometimes I miss sometimes not.

If I am reeeeally struggling I put it in his bottle - I know you BF but perhaps a sippy or a bottle with some water in and calpol in it? or wee bit diluting juice?

It really is hard I feel your pain!

xxxx

Nat, always best to tell your doc about the issue as there are some antibiotics which are less volume/days/doses. I use azithromycin if I really want to get the meds into a reluctant toddler, its usually only a 2.5 ml doseonce daily for 3 days! Its not a first line option due to cost and spectrum of action but can be really useful.

Failing that, hide the medication in whatever you can.

Hey Fliss..I rang GP yest when it became apparent she wasn't taking it properly (I also dropped a syringe full - 5ml - immediately) so they've given me another prescription and said do it for 7 days as opposed to 5 if she isn't taking everything.

It's amoxocillan.

Oliver takes his medicine so good I don't have a problem but my daughter was a whole different game. Getting her to take anything was a battle and we tried it all. The face blowing pinching the nose to force shallows but still half came out. The best ways we found was putting the medicine in the syringe then dipping it in something sweet and putting on her lips she would swallow before she realised it wasn't all nice. I've also found that if you don't remove the syringe then they can't spit so swallow instead xxx

Drat. Amox usually not too bad as most kids quite like it.

You can only do your best with it.

Dentinox sell a medicine dispenser that looks like a dummy - you put the medicine in, put the 'dummy' in their mouth and plunge the medicine in. It works brilliantly as baby is sucking anyway. My lo had his 8 week jabs on Friday and spat the Calpol out when syringed in but took it all from the dispenser. I bought mine from Tesco but about £4 xx

I can't get Caleb to use a syringe at all, he just seems to know when he sees it coming! so I decided to just try it on a spoon and he took it no trouble at all as long as someone else is holding him while I do it. he has tonsillitis and an ear infection x

I might have to invest in the dummy dispenser. Although she doesn't take a dummy lol.

Well I never even knew about those!!! Caleb does and that sounds bloody fantastic lol thanks x

Put it in yoghurt! My son was on amox for 6 weeks when he was 8/9 months old! 5ml x3 a day. I'd split a petite filous down :)

Bee has a milk issue (currently under investigation) She reacts to yoghurt, milk and cheese - her face goes all blotchy and her eyes go bloodshot. They don't think it's an actual allergy as it's only happened since weaning.

Bless her.... I don't think medicine in her porridge made with water is going to make her any happier to take it? James could always tell the difference when I laced his yoghurt with medicine.

Porridge with a fruit pot! My son can tolerate yoghurt and cheese but not milk! We make his porridge with formula and add abit of fruit pot for taste? Try adding in that or mashed banana?

Try lactose free yoghurts aswell ? :) or soya yoghurts x

Have you tried it on the spoon? My almost five month old hates having medicine syringed in but will suck it off the spoon?

I've done today's lot (with a fair amount of waste)

Will try spoon tomorrow. She does love a spoon.

Also getting the Detinox medicine thingy sent into my local Boots for tomorrow.

Thanks as always ladies.

I know she's still quite young but does she eat jelly. A friend of mine measured out doses and made little jelly cubes. My boys are quite good with taking theirs so no other advice. Hope you find something that works x

Well the dummy thingy is the best so far... although still not ideal as she is spitting some out. The spoon turned into a wrestling match!!!

Been given extra antibiotics though and told to do 7 days - as opposed to 5.

She might get used to the taste and not spit it out so much! Hopefully you'll get enough into her over 7 days xx
