Hi everyone

This is mainly for people that have GD or knowledge on it

I had my GTT last Tuesday. Rests came
Back a bit odd:

Fasting bloods: 5.6
Second bloods (post sugar drink): 4.7

So it's weird that my fasting bloods are higher than my post drink bloods! If anything it should be other way round! My levels aren't concerning but my fasting bloods are at the cut off for normal so they sent me home with a monitor to check on them over next few days

Again all my bloods are within range but my morning bloods are just a lot higher than you would expect. I'm worried they are going to class me as high risk (ideally want to give birth at a midwifery led unit which I would be able to do if high risk)

So basically what I want to ask - what would you class as a high reading?? My highest has be 7.4 which I read is still ok. But I don't have anyone to compare with. What were your GTT test readings that confirmed you had GD?

Sorry for the personal questions I'm just confused! I don't know if I had it or not! Xx

I'm not sure about GD but in normal diabetes 7.4 is fine. Normal is classed between 4-8.

Thank you for this makes me feel a little more calm - I've been fretting ever since they started monitoring me! X

I had the same problem to start with. I could keep aftermeal bloodsugars in ok range with diet, but fasting was always high. They explained to me, there is nothing you can do about it (do eat healthy and exercise), it is just how your body works. Fasting sugars can be dangerous as it could mean you had elevated sugars circulating all night. With after meal, it is just aftermeal. Unfortunately, as pregnancy progresses, sugars in blood tend to go higher - i started with levemir at night, but have to take rapid release insulin injections at every mealtime now since 34 weeks.
The whole GD thing is so confusing, sometimes you just dont have an explanation why sugar is gone up. Its hormonal. Its the heat. It could be protein which you are not digesting properly (like my eggwhite intolerance). Wrong carbs. Too many healthy complex carbs. Not enough exercise. Stress from exercise. Im sure theres more...

Thanks for the info Inga

Its all very confusing - and this is the first sort of 'health scare' I've ever had so I'm not taking it well! I can't help wonder if this is a pregnancy thing or life problem that I'll have to deal with. Or is it even a problem (my specialist keeps telling me not to worry!) but it's very hard not too!! X

When I was diagnosed with GD, my fasting bloods were 9.4 and my post test ones were 10.2. This was apparently way too high!!! Yours sound fine. I agree the fasting one was odd as it was higher than the one taken after, but you can check this at home with the monitor you've been given. May have just been a weird reading.

GD isn't a problem for life, it's a pregnancy thing (even my horrific readings went right back to normal a day after my son was born), but it can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life(I now have a diabetic check every 3 years). However, I really don't think you need to worry with sugars of 5.6 xx

Thanks a bunch for your post Ella you've been a big help!

My diabetes specialist rang earlier and I have him my readings - he's happy with them but told me to continue to monitor - I just feel so in limbo, do I or don't I have GD? No one will give me a straight answer! Am I high risk? What impact is on my baby? Does the baby need extra monitoring??

I have a meeting tomoro with a bunch of specialist so I can pick their brain! Just feel so confused!!! X

Ask loads of questions tomorrow! They'll answer them all, I'm sure. They may just think because you're borderline they'd rather keep an eye on you than not xx

Well all the specialists were lovely but very unhelpful!Basically they still aren't sure if I have GD (they don't think I do but my morning results are still on the high side of normal) so they want to do the GTT test again on Thursday so hopefully I will get a definitive answer! Fingers crossed it will say I don't have GD and I can get back to enjoying my pregnancy x

Update - test results show I do not have GD!

Fasting bloods: 5.2
Post lucozade bloods: 4.2

They are happy with these and back to being low risk and midwifery led! So relieved I don't think I realised how much it was effecting my state of mind! Thanks for everyone's experiences you helped greatly xxx

Yay! So pleased for you. Didn't think it was GD, but they've been incredibly thorough, which is good xx

Yes I can't fault their attentiveness! Although I found it a bit over cautious I completely appreciate them being that way when it comes to my baby! X

How quick do you have breakfast after you wake up, I read the other day that people should have breakfast within an hour after they get up and it had something to do with glucose levels. Glad you don't have GD and are back on low risk!

I probs get up about 6:30/7 and don't often eat til 9! I did wonder if eating something straight away might lower them! Might try some granary toast! Mind you I don't need to monitor anymore but I'm going to consciously make better food choices xx
