Hi All. Had my 12 week scan today which was great, apart from that they found some v small fibroids (2cm). Apparently 30% of pregnant women have them and between 50 - 80% of other women. Still worried though:-( They have made me an appointment with a consultant for next week.

Does anyone have any experience of these? Any advice would be appreciated. Xx

Try not to worry as you have already found out Fibroids are really common. They are areas of muscular tissue within your uterus and can be a range of sizes from tiny to over 10cm. They can cause heavy and more painful periods although many people have them and have no symptoms at all. If they press on the endometrial cavity of your uterus they can make it more difficult to become pregnant, but as you are already pregnant this is obviously not the case! In pregnancy they can only really cause a problem if they are really big and located so that they are covering your cervix, therefore bocking the 'way out' for the baby. Most fibroids are not near the cervix though and this is something they will be able to tell staight away from you scans. If they get really big and cause problems they can be removed but I think this is only in extreme cases. Fibroids are hormone dependant and so will shrink away on there own when the menopause is reached. The consultant should tell you everything you need to know and answer all of your questions.

Thanks for this kizzy. Do you have them yourself or know someone who does?

I've got a couple apparently - about the same size as yours. They were first found at my 12 week scan but they are not in the way at all so I didn't need to see anyone else.

Apparently they love pregnancy hormones so can grow bigger while you're pregnant but mine hadn't grown at the time of my 20 week scan.

Try not to worry!

Thanks 'Cat. It's good to hear you've had no issues. It has put a bit of a dampner on the scan results to be honest, but trying not to worry. X

Good feedback fro kissy - well done, I had never heard of these, and they sound very common then, try not to worry hun , sounds like they will check you out regularly and do ask lots of questions when you see the consultant

I have 2, one down the bottom by the cervix :( and one up by the baby :( will be waiting to see what the consultant says tomorrow.

I've got one and when they first found it it was 7cm by 6cm by 5cm so quite big. I had no idea that I had it and it was only picked up when I had a bleed at 18 weeks (not to do with the fibroid apparently) It hasn't caused me any problems and they just measure it each time I go for a scan. Mine sits on the outside of the uterus wall so doesn't cause any problem to baby. Mine is actually getting smaller at each scan by the looks of things. They don't seem to mention it much so hosp can't be too worried. Hope this helps. PS- the info on the net looks quite scary (I looked it up when I was diagnosed) It talks about difficulties getting pregnant etc but as someone else has said- you are already pregnant (as I was) so no problems there.
Pam xx

Thanks ladies. It's reassuring to know that others have them and haven't had problems. I will let you know how it goes on Tuesday. X

Hi All, my consultant visit was bizarre. First I was seen by a nurse who thought I had come for my 12 week scan and bloods (which I had in the same place last week), then they couldn't find my records. When eventually they sorted their act out and found my notes (an hour later) the consultant said there was little to be concerned about and I was still considered a normal pregnancy. She said they were so small and in the wall of the uterus so they would not cause any problems. She said a huge growth rate would only make them about 4 cm which was still really small. So I am much happier now.

Thanks for your advice, it really helped when I was obsessing! Xx
