Hi there

Firstly, thanks so much again for all your good wishes yesterday- I really appreciated it.

I just wanted to explain how I'm feeling after yesterday and I suppose I'm looking for a bit of support really.

Bubs has been measuring small ever since the first scan but I always put this down to the fact that by my LMP dates bubs is due on 11th October but by my dates (I used ovultation sticks and so know I ovulated 5 days later that month than LMP would suggest) I'd actually be due on 16th/17th October.

I have explained this at every scan and even for my dates bubs is measuring a little small.

When I was taken in yesterday morning they did an emergency scan to ensure the placenta hadn't ruptured and the sonographer got me back on the table to recheck her measurements because bubs was measuring below the 5th centile going by my LMP dates. I explained that I felt I was around a week behind based on when we conceived and she said that sounded more like it but that bubs was small even based on those dates and that would put her in the 5th centile.

I am going to have another scan in 2 weeks and the specialist will analyse the growth.

I am just a bit worried/upset because bub has always measured small in every scan but from what I can see has been growing consistently despite that.

At the moment, going by LMP bubs is below the 5th centile and that her head is measuring small and I am so worried about what that means to the point that I am almost beginning to not look forward to bubs arriving because I am so worried for her that there may be a problem. Nobody has exactly suggested this but at the same time I can't help but worry. Bubs is very, very active so they said they would only be concerned if she was small and not moving much.

Does this just mean that she's going to be small or does this indicate that perhaps there will be complications? Has anyone else had a small full term baby or the experience of bubs measuring small on scans? I am only 5ft1 and was only 6 pounds 4 when I was born- so perhaps she is just a small baby?

I don't know, but the whole thing has me feeling a bit sad and worried for my little girl :(

Oh hun - I don't know what to say. But didn't want to read and run  xx

Sounds like you will just have a small little one! Hospitals always do that - take absolutely no notice of what you say about your due date and the fact that you are a small person yourself! They follow the guidelines so rigorously that thy lose sight of the fact that these guidelines are exactly just that - a guide! Not an absolute! As long as the growth is consistent with your true due date and baby is active, try not to worry! Easier said than done I know!

oh annie im sorry for the stress you are having.. i dont know anything about the sizes of baby im afraid but fingers crossed really that everything will turn out ok xx

ah sweety im sure everything will turn out fine, not being funny but surely every baby is different in size and not all get as big as the "average" or "normal"? i feel for you, i would be thinking just the same as you if i were in your shoes. im really hoping everything is ok for you, and it will be. corse some babies are going to be smaller! not what you want to hear all the time from medical people im sure! xxx

Well at 5ft 1 having a 10lber wouldn't be right either so I'd expect you to have a baby a little smaller than the average but that is nothing whatsoever to worry about hun

The important thing will be consistent growth which is why they'll recheck it in 2 weeks. Have they checked the blood flow to the baby? They thought Katie hadn't grew last time and the antenatal clinic (although having a very good scanner sent me for a more detailed scan to measure growth and blood flow to the placenta) referred me.

They check fluid levels which can affect growth, blood flow to the placenta which can also affect growth. If bubs has always been on the small side it would seems your lil girl is growing with her curve and nothing wrong with that :)

My friend was told all along her pregnancy that her baby was gonna be big and was always in the top end of the scale when she had her at 39w + 4d she was a tiny little 6lber. Try not to worry too much Hun they are all different and docs are not always right and who knows what bloody normal is these days, it's just the same as someone being told their baby is measuring bigger x as ling as she's moving and your feeling healthy and if you have anymore concerns get yourself down the hospital and tell them to check u out xx hope your ok Hun thinkin of u xx

Try not to worry,my sis was induced 2 weeks early cos baby was measuring small, all thru the labour they said they were v concerned that she was smaller than expected...when my did was pushin they said that she was only goin to b 3lb! When she was born she was 5lb 2oz...small but not exceptionally so,if she was left to cook to full term she would have prob been 6lb! My sisters only got a tiny frame so baby was never gonna b huge but the doctors do get it wrong,if u feel that baby's happy and healthy then don't let them scare u into anythin ur not comfortable with xx

Thanks guys, I just know that my bump, whilst not huge as I''m not huge, has been growing consistently throughout the pregnancy and that she moves a lot. I never expected to have a baby that would be over 6-7lbs as all my siblings were within that range too and as I say, she has measured small at every scan, but I suppose with all the drama of yesterday my emotions are at a peak at the moment. I can't stop looking at my avatar pic and thinking, surely she's ok - that pic was taken at around 23 weeks and she looks perfectly formed to me and has definitely grown and increased movement since then.

I dunno, I probably need a good nights sleep and some chocolate :)

aw hun dont let them worry or scare you your gona be feeling vunrable after such a day as others have said she probably just gona be a bit dinky your dinky so it follows also growth scans are only a guildline there is no exact or norm in life big hugs for you xxxx

Right I'm 5ft and when I was 17 weighed about 7st when I met my 1st sons father. Bearing in mind, both of us were around 6lbers born. So my son was born full term at 5lb 13oz. I had growth scans and charts to track his movements and he was still born healthy. (with a huge appetite I might add!)

My 2nd son was a whole different board game! Born 6lb 11oz 4 weeks early (don't think my body wouldve coped full term with how much he was growing, I really struggled with him) I weighed a good 3stone heavier with him and he's got a different father (who's now my husband) who was around 7lb born.

I really think it depends on genetics and how your body frame is. I really wouldn't worry about her being a little smaller, your body will do it's job perfectly to provide her with the best that you can give Hun.

I've been for my 4d scan today and they told me that bubba is measuring 32 weeks instead of 30 and is bigger than average! I was 9lb and my siblings 9lb 13oz and 8lb 8oz, so expected bubba to be quite big! It silly that they're making you so concerned about your baby being smaller than average, when it doesn't seem to matter that mine is bigger, if you get what I mean  My friend has a very small frame and was told all through her pregnancy that her baby would be small, but they expected it! Try not to worry, sounds to me like its to be expected that your baby is smaller x x

I woulnt worry Hun I'm 5ft 2 and a half :D and I have measured small my previous two pregnancys so much I had growth scans
And they told me they were thinking of taking my son out at 35 weeks but then dissided againt it they told me e would be 6lbs max and he was born three days ova weighing 8lbs 3oz lol!! They did like 9 extra scans too so I wouldn't worry and my friend just a bit taller than me went two weeks ova and had a big bump and gave birth to a 6lb'der so I wouldn't worry x

 i've had the opposite problem to you! i'm only 5'1 as well and had the shock of my life when i had a 9lb12 baby  with #2 i asked and asked for a growth scan cos i was scared that i was gona have a 10lb-er! i got told had K been 10lb they would have done it, but cos she was just under, they wouldnt! they just couldnt get it in their heads that i'm a good 5inches shorter than the average woman in the uk so a 9lb12 baby was massive for me :wall: thankfully i had a smaller one this time!

but yea, it just sounds like you're going to have a small baby! if she's been growing steadily then there should be no problems :) bloody doctors and their averages!!

my midwife told me that being only 5ft1 i will probs be told im measuring small, i have got a big bump, but im normally a 14/16 anyway n carry weight on my belly, so i can understand why i look big now,

my mum is only 5ft1 too and got told with me she was going to have a small baby even tho she had a huge bump, she was a 8 when she fell pregnant with me and ended up a 16 full term! n true to there word, i was full term n 4lb5,

my hubster is 6ft1 and weighed 8lb, so as long as our little person is somewhere in-between 5-8lb i think we will be fine, as stunned said they are guidelines, but they seam to forget that there to guide them, not written in bloody stone!!

good luck hun, and im sure your little one will be a healthy weight & size

xxx

So long as baby has grew buy the next scan there's no problem at all :)

I suppose I am just a bit confused as while I am short, dh is 6ft 3 so I expected bubs to be bigger because of that. Mamafy, I think I will focus on what you said- as long as bubs is growing surely all will be ok. X

I dont think the scans are much cop, my mam like me carrys huge and when she had my little bro 9 years ago sent her for a scan on her due date as her belly had gone up 9cm in 2wks they did the scan and said he was 8lb 2oz so was fine to have a nat birth she had him the next day one day over due weighting 10lb 13oz so the scan was way out.
