~February & March Mummies and Babies~

Really feeling down ladies just had midwife and she said Alex had only gained 20g instead of the recommended 40g and if it weren't for the fact i was seeing HV next week then she wouldnt of discharged us at all.

She questioned his latch if he was feeding for 15 minutes each time and that i had to make sure he was eating for 15 minutes each feed and to wake him if get starts to get sleepy.

Totally gutted especially as these past two days all he wants to do is be on my boob or sleep on me, i thought it was a growth spurt but now i am paranoid he isnt eating enough and that's what's unsettling him.

Sassy what's your secret lol!!? I've still got about 2 stone to loose so quite a lot of hard work ahead :-(! Xxx

My phone finally loaded your photos. Your boys look so cute DW and Maddie xxx

Hl28.... The 2 stone was lost due to hyperemesis, the loosing weight now I guess is cos I never stop, if I don't do jobs they don't get done!!! I wanna loose about 3 stone more though as I'm lots over weight!!!!

Vicky, please don't feel down on yourself, can't believe mw said that, what does it matter if they put 20 or 40g on as long as they are healthy and not loosing weight! Your doing a fab job huni, don't let anyone tell you different! I wish I could bf instead of having to express!!!!

Vicky, that midwife should have also told you that most babies, especially breastfed babies, lose weight in the first few days. You've both done very well to put it on. Your milk only came in a few days ago and your baby is getting used to it all. He'll become much quicker and have a stronger suck.
My little one lost almost a whole pound when she was weighed! The midwives can make it all so stressful.

My advice is don't give up, let your baby carry on sucking whenever he needs it and the weight will come on. It works I promise!! Mine had gone from 8lbs2 to 7lbs 4 and now weighs 10lbs, she's 5 weeks. I had to mix feed to get her back to 8lbs2 but for the past few weeks I've been exclusively breastfeeding and she's gained weight and for the first time has big yellow poos regularly.

Don't worry you're doing everything right and he'll put on the weight! If you're still wary of how your breastfeeding, have a look to see if there are those breastfeeding support groups that you could go too?

Xxx

Vicky just commented on your other thread. Keep going hun your doing a fab job xxx

Sassy I've also lost 2 stone. I've reached my plateau now. I need to cut out the chocolate and I think I'll lose a teeny bit more. Breast feeding/expressing really helped me though.

As for exercising my wound feels really bruised the last couple of days, so am going to wait a while but I still go for walks with the baby every day. I need to lose another 1.5 stone before I'm happy and back to the weight I was when I got married!!

He only lost 2% body weight in his first week which she said was brilliant and now she is telling me yeah he is still gaining but not what it says on a stupid piece of paper.

She then saw me getting upset and said but your doing an amazing job as he is still gaining weight ... Wtf!!

So i said what happens ic he continues to not put on enough weight and she said the HV would put a "feeding plan" together which could include expressing but then she went on to say you cant breasfeed and express at the same time which i thought was bollocks!!

I can only echo the others Vicky, just keep at it. Jack was FF and hardly gained any weight and still doesn't now. You'll see when you meet him, he's much shorter than most toddlers his age but he's thriving so I'm not fussed. Just look at it that at least Alex has gained some weight so you're doing a good job x

She doesn't sound like knows what she's on about!! Is there a drop in clinic at your docs to chat with your HV? She might put your mind at rest x

Wow a feeding plan! Bit OTT seeing as he's just over a week old isn't it?! Jack gained just 2lb in the whole of 2012 and nobody ever said anything to me! Even when he was I'll in hospital in October and I told them he'd lost 2lb in a week they just smiled. I'm sure Alex will be just fine, you're both learning still x

She sounds useless!! I expressed and breastfed. But I think it sounds like you're doing really well and won't need too. God I hate people like her!

Vichy ive sent you the advice my midwife gave me on fb.

I hate all this contradicting info! It's hard enough as it is!!

Has anyone ever actually had a good Heath Visitor? Jack's was crap and wanted to chat with OH about football rather than dong her job! His Midwife was fantastic though. Harry's Midwife was really wishy washy and he doesn't even have a health visitor yet!!

Thanks ladies i wasn't worried at all about him until she said all that. She even commented on how alert he was. He poos at least two big ones a day he wees regularly .... I think it doesn't help that he is going through this clingy constant grazing stage where i can't put him down without him crying so that's playing on my mind also.

My midwife was great - I cried when she discharged us!! She boosted my confidence so much! I'm dreading the health visitor tomorrow tho! X

I am hoping my HV will be more supportive and not make me feel like i am failing my baby!!

My MW was lovely. She even has an open invite to pop in for a cuppa if she's got a spare half hour. My HV seems nice too, she likes cats and my cat likes people- match made in heaven :)

Vicky, so sorry the MW has upset you. You're doing a fantastic job- don't you forget it xxx

I'm now trying to lose the weight too, I put on 2.5 stone by the end of pregnancy and am now 12lbs more than I weighed at the start. I was overweight to begin with though and have a lot to lose to be healthy. Blake helps a lot though- I struggle to find time to eat! I completely lost my appetite when I got mastitis and it hasn't properly returned yet. I'm using pushing the pram as my exercise- lots of walking will shift the flab.

My midwife was great. However I was in hospital for a week and had quite a few midwives on the ward who all gave contradicting info and some made me feel like a complete failure. When they saw she had lost all that weight, rather than asking questions like 'has your milk come in?' Which it hadn't and id told them about a billion times. She yelled out across the room, 'quick wrap her up and get her to stop moving around, she needs to conserve energy. Ill get the doctor!' Dumb cow! I complained to the doctor and asked if I could have someone else. How unprofessional to yell that out! Like I was purposefully starving my baby.

I had 2 HVs, one was shite and just filled in forms and scared the crap out of me by telling me that I needed to get my baby her bcg asap as the area I live in is high risk for TB.
The second was lovely, told me i had lovely eyes and told me I was doing a good job. That's all they need to do really, be encouraging and reassuring and if there are any major problems then of course they offer advice.

Basically if they are pooing and weeing, have an appetite and are gaining weight gradually, they are absoloutely fine.

I am really going off midwifes the info they give is so contradicting my brain is fried!!!

How do you ladies put your little ones to bed? Do you swaddle them? Do you use a basket or crib ? What blankets do you use?qoild love to out my little one to bed tonight without him crying for me after 5 minutes he just wants to be held allll the time.
