Who's had it and was it worth it?

I know someone who opted for it, and said it was more painfull than being in labour anyway, as they put it in the wrong place 4 times and by the time the got it right he was pretty much out?

Whats everyone elses experiences?

They took 6 or 7 goes to put mine in, but the gas and air got me through that bit!!! Id recommend one with out doubt, it got me through my 38 hour labour LMAO :rotfl:
Id say take it as it comes.....i didnt plan on having one, but then again i didnt plan on a 38 hour labour!

LOL I dont think anyone plans on a 38 hour labour. I keep winding my OH up saying that working out from the time we concieved (on holiday) they were all wham bam thank you mam's as we were sharing an appt with friends and there were no locks on the doors lol, so I keep saying if the little un comes as quick as you did, I wont have any problems with a long labour ha ha ha

Cheers for the info anyway

38 hour labour! Sheesh, I though my first was bad at 15 hours.

I didn't think I would have an epidural, but after just the first contraction, I was screaming and begging for an epidural. Unfortunately it didn't really take away the pain and they let the med wear off soon so that I would know when to push.

The only way of avoiding the pain of labour is to have a c-section, but that's for emergencies and you don't heal as fast.

I had one with my first it was GREAT. I was shouting for one with my second but the anaethetist was too busy

i was the same as urchin!

i had one wit Dior and any one thats stubborn and wont have one is just plain bonkers in my eyes  it was great. i had the neadle in 1 hr later had a top up that was it. a pain free labour and lay in bed for 30mins cuddleing Dior then i was able to walk again :D

but no one would give me one with Harley even though i was begging screaming crossing my legs refusing to give birth untill i had one :(

Sorry Dionne but that is quite funny  You had quite a quick labour with Harley didn't you?

I didn't have one as I didn't need one, but I wouldn't rule it out if I was going through a really long labour. I'm hoping to have this one at home though so will only be able to have tens and gas and air unless I have to go to hospital.

Mine did not work 100%- but it was still great and I would recommend it. While he was putting it in I used gas and air and held the midwives fingers! I don't really remember any pain

I had one with my first and it was great but it went in first time and i had no problems. Wanted one with my second but couldn't have one.

I had one with Noah as mine was a 36 hour labour. I didnt find it painfull having it placed even though it took numerous attempts from 2 anethetists (I had complications due to previous spinal surgery). The epi was great at the time, unfortunatly I was one of the few women who got a spinal headache because the needle pierced the membrane surrounding the spinal cord, causing spinal fluid to leak away from the brain resulting in the mother of all headaches, where I had to stay lying down for 10 days till the hole had repared itself and my muscles locked up so I couldnt move, and had to give up breast feeding! The chances of this happening to you are about 1 in 1000. And if it does, the headache startes a while later so you dont need to worry about it being even worse during the labour, plus you can have a spinal patch to repare the whole (basically they give you another epi using some of your own blood, so a clot forms over the hole) Unfortunatly for me due to my complications this didnt work. I dont want to scare you but wanted to let you know what happens worst case senario, I still think epis are great dispite my experiance (I had a couple more in the past for operations) and so long as you have no previous surgery or spine problems you should be fine.

.

yes very fast. Dior was 18hrs Harley i got in the labour ward at 4am he was born at 5am

but i found a fast labour more scary. i was in shock had the shakes and wouldnt talk or look at harley for 3hrs :(
but i was so nasty to all the docs in labour :x all i wanted was an epidural
but i do feel proud knowing i done it with a lil bit of gas and air :D

I also got a spinal headache and had the spinal patch which worked for 24 hours then the headache came back. I must say it's the worst pain ever and I would never have another epidural again because of it. My epidural only worked on one side and they had to resite it but it never worked, I regret having the epidural so much

I had an epidural with my daughter and it was fantastic! It was the only way I got through 25 hours of labour. I have had epidural written in my birth notes since I was 5 weeks pg!!! But then I was told that it was a bad idea because I have acute SPD. I cried for ages when they told me this. Just the idea of trying to give birth without one was scaring the hell out of me.

Now I'm having a section, and this will be with an epidural, and I'm ove the moon!!

are you getting the section due to spd yankett,i had it last pregnancy and it stillplays up now,was hoping for a section and sterelisation when i eventually do catch, but got a feeling im going to have to push it continually at them, never had nothing with lily as was afraid of going past my pain barrier with my pelvis but i didnt care at the end and i think i did more damage than needed

Yes I am Loulou. I've been really lucky and have a great mw. When I asked her, she booked me an appointment at the hospital, but they apparantly couldn't get me in until the 30th August (EDD is 7th Sept!). She then phoned again at my next mw appointment and got me in for the following day at the Pregnancy Assesment Service. They tried to talk me out of it, but I was adamant. So they booked me an appointment for last Friday with the consultant. He took one look at me and booked the section.

If you want one, you have the right to have one. I felt that I would do myself more harm if I tried to deliver naturally as I have only limited movement in my pelvis. I feel so relieved knowing I am having a section.

I had no choice with maddie, and in the end it only took to one side.

I was adimant i wasn't having one but ..... OMG it's good!!! have it, have it, HAVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

I had one...I asked for it at 10pm though but had had to wait until midnight before the anasesthatist was free....by that time I felt like I was gonna die lol.
It didn't really hurt going in (I was FAR too much in pain from the contractions to give a stuff about a needle), and once it kicked in, it was fantastic.
I'm definitely asking for one next time round.

Epidural was amazing! Like xena I was in way too much pain to feel it going in and once I had it I managed to sleep  it's amazing!

I never had one with my first two and wont be able to have one at the birth centre with this baby anyway,i just love the pain of labour :fib:  xx
