Right whats your experiences on labour?
Is it as bad as everyone makes out i know people say as soon as you hold the baby you dont even rem the pain is this the case?? Also am planning on going for epidural as i cant take pain full stop i cant even handle my period cramps lol so i think the epidural is best for me.
Whats everyone's thoughts on epidural??

i had one with my little boy five years ago when i was 19 after being sent home from the hospital for 3 days and not sleeping as they told me i was in the early stages it didnt feel like that 2 me lol when i got took in i was about 5cm and they broke my water and the pain got worse so i said to my mam how bad is it gunna get she said bad ha ha so i asked for an epidural and didnt feel a thing after that sat there whaching the telle. But with my little girl i was in hospital for 2 hours and and only had pain for the last 40 mins and she was out in 2 pushes with only gas and air so i think my ponit is it depends on the birth they can all be totally diffrent xxxxx

Every month, I would be off my feet with my period. Real real bad, couldn't even stand.. Yes, contractions are painful.. But with every pain you are one step closer to holding your baby, it is so much more bearable because you know there is something at the end of all of the pain.. Gas and air works wonders, you wouldn't believe how much ease it gives, then you have the option of pethidene and then the epidural.. It's all there for you :) I done it with just gas and air, and there was no pain once he was out.. And it's right as soon as baby is set on your chest everything is forgetten :) xx

ah thats fab to hear. Ive seen some clips of epidurals going in and it kind of freaks me out. Its not natural to have something inside your spine!! But thats just my personal opinion. If you can handle the epi going in then I dont see why not. My biggest anxiety is all the tubes, Ive always had a slight fear of having to have a drip, and NG feeding tubes really freak me out!

You never know I might be yelling for all the intervnetion going by 3cm, but Im hoping gas and air and a birthing pool with make it manageable.

I used to have dire period pains too, I fainted once through the pain, I would be totally crippled by them, I went on the pill and then came off it and for some reason they never came back that bad. I still had cramps but I could just carry on through them IYKWIM. My mum never had period pains in her life and when I was like 17 she always used to tease me saying "if you cant handle a period you're never gonna cope with having a baby!" Its kind of stuck in my mind, although I dont think some people realise how bad they can be, is it the same kind of sensation as a contraction?

thanks for the advice

the real reason i want an epidural is becuase its pain free lol. Although i have heard some good stories and some very bad ones. Alot of people say its the worst feeling ever not being able to feel your bottom half i believe that would be really strange feeling. Just one of those things though everyone is different some people can handle pain and some people cant lol am defo one of the ones who cant. Plus this is my first am sure every mother for the first time is in the same position as me terrified but strangely excited lol. I have my mdwife in 2 weeks time so am sure she will help me out hehe

yeah Im strangely excited too, my sister thinks Im mad, she's panicking already and I had a go at her ina restraunt last weekend cos she was being dramatic about it. I was like "look, if you're going to behave like that I dont want you anywhere near me until Im home from the hospital, Im not having a stressful, panicky environment, Im going to have a calm and peaceful labour!" my sister looked so shocked and then laughed and said "yeah right" Honestly couldve strangled her! She totally doesnt understand the whole positive attitiude things, its hard not to get worried about it as a first timer but Im determined to keep positive cos i know the calmer i am the easier it will be. I hope she never gets pregnant!!!

Epidurals are not always what they seem - they dont ever tell you the full story like; it can give you a temperature which can lead to baby's heart rate increasing and therefore you needing an emergency C-section (what happened to me), it can slow down labour and also can increase the chance of having a forcep delivery. If I had know this before I would never have asked for one. Im sure it works for some and is great but there is another side to it. Also it doesnt always work 100%, it can fail and only work on one side. Its not always the great pain free option that is promoted - IMO intervention leads to intervention :)

i'm still in two minds about an epi-do-dah.. i really don't like the thought of something in my spine like you said tiny - it's a bit unnatural! deffo gonna have a read of that sheet.

adele - i'm a first time mum too and soooo rubbish with pain!!!! i scream if i get a splinter and get into hot sweats if i have to get blood tests lmaooo.. how pathetic does that sound?!

i'm thinking about all pain releif.. (except for the scary thing in your leg :O)

but does gas and air make you feel drunk? cause i hate that feeling when you feel out of control..

hahah i heard gas and air is supposed to be really good lol you constantly want more. I havent got a midwife yet so i havent really had anyone to speak to about pain relief etc. But i think if u cant take pain your better with epidural but knowing my luck the epidural wont work for me or it will be to late to get one lol

i was determind not to have an epi-doo-dah with both of mine, with rhys i used gas and air - i was in labour 2 1/2hrs. with ffion i was in labour for 25minutes and had approx 2 puffs of gas and air LOL!

all the pain is forgotten when you hold your baby..

really lol thats excellent so it can be over that quick thats fantastic i wish i was brave enough to go natural but i really dont think i could handle it to be honest.

erm i wouldnt exactly say i prefered ffions labour over the one i had with rhys....

because it all happened very fast i felt like i was unprepared, still very 'with it' and it felt like my downstairs was being ripped in two!!

ooo god i believe that would be very sore. I have heard you need to get a stitch ? Or does it depend on how big the baby is etc?

ooo maybe just gas and air may be an option terrie!! you're verryyy lucky xxx

i had one stitch which was just for 'cosmetic' reasons

thought id share my birth story!

12.15 – went for a walk

1.00 – contractions one min apart and really unbearable, got checked over and wasn’t dilating, got very frustrated and kept bouncing on my ball. Was sending Colin shitty text messages lol

1.40 - the nurse ran me a bath and helped me get in but as soon as I did I knew I needed to get out and go to the labour suite. They didn’t believe me but checked me over (now 2am) and I was 4cm dilated.

2.00 – they rang Colin and took me to delivery suite

2.10 – started on gas and air

2.15 – Colin arrived

2.20 – waters broke

2.25 – Ffion arrived into the world weighing a perfect 7lb 7oz

thankyou terrie!!! really informative :) i hope mine goes similar!! xxxx
