Hey all Im considering paying for an early scan probably about 7 weeks.

Does having a scan that early mean it has to be internal/vaginal? Im not liking the idea of that tbh, anyone been scanned 6/7 weeks?

Both pregnancies at 6 weeks were transvaginal however at 8 weeks I was scanned at the hospital abdominally this time yet last time was vaginally.
It's not pleasant but not too bad you kind of forget as your busy looking at the screen x

I've had several transvaginal scans and they weren't too bad, a lot easier than a smear

I have had a lot of trans vaginal scans during the course of my treatment and then my early scan was as well. They really are painless and nothing like a smear. Trust me you will be too busy looking at the screen to notice were the probe is! X

Thanks ladies. I'm going to maybe hold off until 8 weeks. If I can. My booking appointment is at 7.

Then again I might just deal with it to get the reassurance xx

Pepper Mint I missed your reply sorry. I've only had one smear (I'm 24) and the thought of it feeling like that puts me right off. Also I feel like if it was at the hospital I'd be like "okay" but since it's a private scanning clinic I feel, I don't know, weird about an internal.

How big is the ultrasound thing lol I've never seen a vaginal one? x

Hi I had two early scans due to bleeding. I thought I was 7 weeks on the first one which was internal. He showed me the screen and said he could only see a sac and that’s what I saw too. He said I may be earlier than I thought so to come back in two weeks. I spent 2weeks worrying and wondering and the second scan which he said he’d try abdominal but after last time he’d probably have to do another internal he apologised that he must have not had the right angle last time as he showed me a perfect image of a 9 week baby.
I wish I’d not had the first scan it didn’t reassure me at all. But I understand some people are on a long journey and welcome any reassurance that things are ok

hi i have had private early scans at 8 weeks and at 8 weeks 2 days and neither were internal. I'm not actually sure if a private clinic does internal?

if you can hold out til 8 weeks, i would, because it is a long wait til the 12 week scan if you go too early for reassurance, and you will be worrying still even if all was ok at 6/7 weeks lol

It is much thinner than a speculum they use for a smear. I had my 8 week scan at my fertility clinic so I knew it would be an internal scan. Why don’t you call the place where you are going to get your private scan and ask if it will internal or external? X

Thank you. They just said depending if they cant see properly they might have to do internal? So I wouldn't know until I get there which isn't very reassuring. I guess its just the unknown and abdominal scans feel less intrusive or something x

Thank you I think I might try for 8. I don't know if I can though lol I know I'm being stupid.
I worried through my last one until the end, no matter what. Bought a doppler and everything and learnt how to use it properly, which helped. DD was a nightmare though. Going to talk to OH when he gets in and see what he thinks x

Shanivy, I've had a few and it's really not that bad. They will probably try an abdominal scan first and do a transvaginal if they can't get a good enough view on the abdominal.

Honestly, these things always seem worse in our imagination than they end up actually being.

Thanks GG. :) Thats what they said. Im gonna just grit my teeth and go for it. Just need to decide when to book for, if I can hold off for 8 or just go for 7. x

Agree with the other ladies that they’re not at all as bad as you’d think. It’s not obviously something you’d do for fun but it’s not painful, sometimes twinges of discomfort if they have to move it to certain positions but totally bearable. And you’ll be so focused on the screen you won’t mind. I see you’ve got a child already so you’re probably used to getting fiddled about with down there already so no worse than that really!

At 8 weeks they saw fine through abdo scan and I'm quite fat lol. Was vaginally until then... I absolutely hated the idea of vaginal but it's OK... X

Well hmmm I did my have my legs in stirrups to be stitched after birth so I suppose itll be a walk in the park after that haha . Its just been so long and I never had one internal exam until I went to the hospital pushing lol

I want it done, so I'm going to go hoping for an abdominal and if needs be Ill have to suck it up and get it done lol x

Hi Hun,

I've had loads of them, you literally don't feel a thing.

I had one yesterday and they did an abdominal first and TV next.

You could see the abdominal really clear, I think it's easier that way when you have less belly fat.

I saw a heartbeat at 5+5 this time but with my twin pregnancy I went the same day and didn't.

You'll be fine at 6 and a half weeks.

Xx
