I have just had a really quite laughable conversation on facebook about this so i thought i would post it here :)

do you get offended when people say swear words in conversation?

does it make you think differently about them?

because i really dont see how saying

i had a fucking shit day today'

makes someone a bad person - but obviously other people disagree...

I was told i must be comfortable with 'racial hatred and hate speak' because i dont see an issue with the word fuck

I was also told i shouldnt get offended if someone called me a 'fucking bitch' because i am okay with social use of the word fuck...

i think these things are TOTALLY different and totally out of context!

anyway, how do you feel about 'casual' swearing, rather than calling names

personally i would much rather someone said 'i've had a really fucking bad day' than someone using a word like 'slut' or 'bitch' to insult people!

I'm quite bad with swearing, I don't mean too but swear words do slip out.
As long as people don't say them in every sentence I don't find it too bad

Your right, I've had a fucking bad day to you fucking bitch is completely different! Its definitely how you phrase things. I'm always swearing although I don't in front of the kids or the elders iykwim?!

I'm afraid I'm quite sweary but like you only it's never aimed at anyone. It's more like oh I've had a sh!tty day etc. Or oh eff something's happened. I would never dream of directing at someone or calling someone names. I wouldn't abuse someone. I understand some people find it offensive so Im careful in polite company. I think it's rather harsh that someone would liken it to racial abuse. Theyre obviously sensitive but I'd be offended if anyone said anything was racially related.

I dont swear much, but it really doesn't bother me, I just find it strange when people that don't normally swear start, my sister starting swear talking about everyday life but all the time and it really stood out to me I was like what you swearing for lol it took her ages to stop she said it started from work having a fag outside with the girls and a good old moan and swear but it was totally out of character, I always fine o/h swears loads after a night out or been to the pub for a few hours xxx

i am guilty of swearing quite a bit, not infront of LO. i think i swear at the appropriate times iykwim... like i drop something, or something goes wrong...

i dont like seeing kids swear! my friends boy says GAY all the time, and it really bothers me! lol.

I can have a mouth like a sewer at times  but I would never aim it at someone, that's putting things into a whole different context.

My parents don't like swearing, they just think that there is no need for it, but I don't think it offends them as such. Having said that I still wouldn't swear in their company.

My o/h pretty much swears every other word, I'm having to try to get him out of the habit now or else the baby is bound to pick up on it and I'd be mortified (which I know is double-standards on my part).

To say that you shouldn't be offended by getting called names is stupid though, they are being daft saying that x

I swear a lot without meaning to in conversatio I try not too around my girls though. But its never aimed at someone as i do think that is rude .

the whole conversation was ridiculously daft... i was saying you shouldnt get offended by just a word but by what the context is, and that apparently makes me a terrible person LOL

mind you from what i know about this group of people they are a bunch of sad old prudes who only shag to procreate, HATE their OH's and generally live a dismal life of getting wound up by anyone and everyone!

they have their own forum where they discuss their 'alternative' parenting ideas and seem incapable of respecting other peoples points of view etc

knobs the lot of them, its much more refreshing to be here x

fanks! Apparently its also 'passive agressive' to use smiley faces!!

:) :) :)

I think i would go mad without them!

I just don't understand why they are not comprehending the difference between using a swear word in front of someone as opposed to using it directed at them. Surely that can be seen with all manner of words, not just swear ones iykwim?
For example, some people may find saying "for god's sake" offensive
it's a whole different thing to saying my god strike you down blah blah. Does that make sense?

yeah perfect sense... I think its more about being 'incensed' by something than actually being much care about it.. they just want to have a moan about anything and everything :)

they certainly do, one of them started having a moan about grammar... which to be fair i understand to a certain extent (you know, like when you properly cannot understand another person) but really, if you can understand it, why get all outraged about it... its just another way of deciding someone is not good enough or equipt enough to converse with you... which is stupid

I have a mouth like a sewer  but I never say really
Bad words infront of my parents! And I really do
Try not to infront of the girls! It just slips out sometimes! My parents always said it shows a lack of vocabulary which I spose is true cos when I'm really pissed off, there's only a few words that immediately come to mind

Depends who I'm talking to :oooo: Inbredlaws - yes lots of swear words  at them, about them etc

I tend not to swear in public unless its a good mate

It's all about tone isn't it :)

I like to indulge in a bit of swearing when I'm irate - but when people do it aaaaall the time, it can get a bit annoying.

I don't swear much in my own language but when I got with my ex, him being English n iearned most my English from him. He was swearing a lot so o think that's just the way I learned it. It's mainly "fuck/fucking".

Something that I find I hear a lot and its for me horrible when parents and kids say "shut up" to eachother in a serious way. An example today in Asda a mum said to her daughter "please stop running away from me" she was about 7, turned around n said shut up!
I said to demba I would drag Noa out by his ears if he ever disrespected me like that!

How do you tell tone from the internet? xx
